Brunswick Community College was the site on Dec. 4 for the signing of an agreement that will result in advanced nursing training on the college campus.

With the bridge articulation agreement in place, UNC Pembroke will offer its bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) program at the college.

BCC President Susanne Adams welcomed the UNCP contingent to campus.

“Working with our university partner to serve this rural region has been a labor of love for us,” she said. ”Our nurses are eager to continue their education.”

A new organization will begin assisting Brunswick County’s at-risk high school students in the new year.

Men and Women United for Youth and Families (MWUYF) received approval from the Brunswick County Board of Education Dec. 4 to begin working with the four county high schools to help students receive educational and employment training.

Randolph Keaton, director of MWUYF, said the nonprofit organization has offered education and employment training to Bladen, Columbus and Brunswick residents out of their office in Delco for the past 10 years.

Funding provided through a Brunswick Arts Council Grass Roots grant is bringing to life the character of “Mufasa, the wise and noble Lion King.”
The Communities in Schools (CIS) After School Program has contracted with Cheick Sissoko, an accomplished African drummer from West Africa, to teach students from Lincoln and Town Creek elementary schools about the diverse world and how cultures differ, both now and in the past.

South Brunswick Middle School and the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce recognized 30 outstanding students at its fall Good Neighbor breakfast.
Students were chosen by the teachers for demonstrating a positive work ethic and exemplifying a good “neighbor” in their school.
Keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Mike Reaves, who encouraged students to continue on the path of being a good citizen.
