  • BEMC to award scholarships to area seniors

    For the third year, Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC) will again award two scholarships of $5,000 each to high school seniors in Brunswick and Columbus counties.

    The awards are based on a combination of academic achievement, participation in community and school activities, SAT scores, letters of reference and a 1,500 word essay on “Renewable Energy: Jobs of the Future.”

    Waccamaw Elementary has named the following students to its honor rolls:

    Principal’s award

    Kindergarten: Gracie Ball, Bethanie Benton and Caleb Nixon.

    First grade: Daniel Padilla, Osden Sullivan and Adrianna Coveyou.

    Second grade: Carlos Estrada, Blake Inman and Ashton Watkins.

    Third grade: Bailey Lawson, Sara Babson, Carter Smith and Alex Vargas.

    Fourth grade: Bailey Patterson, Hayley Gore and Jonathan Mintz.

    Students graduate from Appalachian

    Appalachian State University has released its graduation list for the fall 2010 semester. A total of 208 graduate students and 812 undergraduate students, including two from Brunswick County, received degrees during ceremonies in December in the Holmes Convocation Center.

    Taylor Merrill Haag of Southport earned a B.S. in communication, journalism.

    Melissa Burton Mendoza of Southport graduated cum laude and earned a B.S. in communication, advertising.

  • The First Tee celebrates with The Golf Ball fundraiser

    The First Tee of Brunswick County celebrated its fifth anniversary with The Golf Ball on Saturday evening, Feb. 12, at 101 Stone Chimney Place. The room was set for 150 guests with golf-themed décor provided by Island Classics of Ocean Isle, accompanied by pictures of the participants of TFTBC, media books and story boards provided by the public relation and Golf Ball committee members. 

  • ATMC Smart Connections grant help students learn

    Students in Kathie Green’s class at Supply Elementary School have really enjoyed their new friends, the Letter People. The special needs students, ranging in ages from 5-11, have been working with the Letter People, courtesy of an ATMC Smart Connections grant, and Green says it has made a world of difference.

  • Board of Education recognizes couple for donations to Waccamaw School

    BOLIVIA—Members of the Brunswick County Board of Education recognized Richard and Susan Petch for their multiple donations to Waccamaw School at its February board meeting.

    During the past two years, Richard and Susan Petch have donated more than $20,000 to the school, which has mainly been used towards updating existing technology and purchasing new equipment.

    Waccamaw principal Beverly Marlowe said the Petch’s donation last year helped the school purchase 28 computers to replace outdated models.

  • NBHS JROTC Military Ball ‘mandatory fun’

    SUNSET BEACH—“Mandatory fun, that’s what we call it,” retired Sgt. 1st Class Timothy Washington said of the North Brunswick High School JROTC Military Ball.

    Students attended the annual Military Ball Saturday night at the Sea Trail Convention Center. The annual event is part of the JROTC curriculum and encourages students to use what they learned in the etiquette chapter and act appropriately in a social setting.
