Teacher to work at South African school
Matilda Scott, a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Shallotte Middle School, is ready for the trip of a lifetime.
Scott was recently selected to participate as a guest teacher in the UNCW Watson College of Education faculty-led international field experience.
On Oct. 29, she will board a plane headed for Port Elizabeth, South Africa, to begin a four-week experience working at Emphaweni K-8 Township School.

Dan and Linda Lynes of Shallotte recently made a $10,000 gift to the Foundation of Brunswick Community College (BCC) to establish an endowed scholarship. The Dan and Linda Lynes Endowed Scholarship has been designated to students in financial need of assistance to attend college.
“Young people are our future and an education is a basic necessity. Students face many challenges and if we can ease a student’s financial worries and make a difference, that’s what we want to achieve,” said Linda Lynes.

“Disaster often captures the hearts and attention of children, just as it does adults. When a child sees a victim that looks like them, they want to help,” explained Kathy Smith, CIS after-school director. “That is what happened in 2005 when the CIS after-school students spearheaded a countywide ‘penny drive’ to support the victims of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia. Although the picture of today’s local victims are not that of a tsunami, hunger can also motivate children to want to help others.”

After serving students and families for 46 years, Robert “Bob” Grimes is getting ready to retire from education.

During his career, Grimes, assistant superintendent for Brunswick County Schools, has served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal.

His leadership and love of reading ignited the system’s Today a Reader-Tomorrow a Leader Initiative. He has also played a key role in the expansion of district’s library collections.
