  • Evelyn Smith Wray Village School students build bridges

    Students at The Evelyn Smith Wray Village School recently participated in a bridge-building contest.

    Sara Rodriguez, science teacher at The Evelyn Smith Wray Village School, said the sixth-grade science class was studying a technological design unit and designed and tested different protocols of design.

    “The way we did this was making our own design for a bridge that needed to hold a 5- and 10-pound weight for at least one minute,” she said.

  • Students get a grip on tennis through CIS

    Volunteers from the Brunswick County Tennis Association (BCTA) are visiting elementary and middle schools across the county with the hope of inspiring the next Serena Williams or Pete Sampras.

    As part of the Communities In Schools (CIS) After School program, students are being introduced to the ABC’s of tennis: ability, balance and coordination.

  • Jessie Mae program helps girls be healthy and happy

    ASH—The girls at Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School are on the run.

    A first-time program in Brunswick County, Girls on the Run, teaches young girls how to gain self-respect while integrating a healthy way of living. The program is designed for third-fifth graders and combines self-esteem enhancement activities along with regular workouts and running in preparation for a 3.1-mile race, which they will participate in this spring.

  • Brunswick Community College announces continuing education class schedule

    The Continuing Education and Workforce Development department at Brunswick Community College offers short-term programs and classes for self-improvement, cultural enrichment, and academic achievement. Many small business courses are free due to funding from a Small Business Center grant. Seniors, 65 and older, can also take many classes free of charge.

  • Bolivia Elementary donates to local food bank

    BOLIVIA—The food bank at Love of Christ Church in Bolivia helps families in need and also provides for students on a daily basis.

    “They have helped provide snacks for the kids who don’t have snacks during the school day from the pantry,” Meg Dingwall, fifth-grade Bolivia teacher, said. “A couple of years ago, we decided to make sure the pantry was stocked.”

  • Supply students graduate from D.A.R.E. program

    D.A.R.E. officer Adam Stanley led the Supply Elementary assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance before 66 fifth-grade students walked across the stage to receive their D.A.R.E. diplomas on Monday, Dec. 8.

    Supply Elementary Principal Dwight Willis welcomed the students, staff and guests to the 2008 D.A.R.E. Ceremony. Special guests were Brunswick County school board member Catherine Cooke, Detective Todd Coring, Brunswick County Sheriff John W. Ingram and motivational speaker Joe Yalch.

  • Students give $1 million to favorite charities

    If Andrew Whitlock had $1 million to give away, he’d use it to build a skate park for boys and girls to skateboard or rollerblade, complete with boards and blades for everyone free of charge.

    Not being able to keep her million dollars, Alisha Skaggs would donate to St. Jude’s, so it could help parents with previous medical bills and provide clothes and toys to the sick children.

  • West Brunswick Relay team kicks off 2009 event fundraising

    SHALLOTTE—West Brunswick High School’s Relay for Life team is already busy fundraising for Relay for Life 2009, but many are motivated by the inspirational story of one of their own teammates.

    The team had a silent auction last week and raised nearly $2,000, selling student artwork, photography and other items donated by people throughout the community.

    The team also put up a Tree of Hope and decorated it with awareness ribbons, and sold advanced luminaries for May’s Relay.

  • Fifth-graders graduate D.A.R.E.; seventh grade begins new curriculum

    As one class of D.A.R.E. students graduates, another is ready to begin.

    Fifth-graders across Brunswick County are participating in D.A.R.E. graduations this month, celebrating their success in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.

    D.A.R.E. officers Adam Stanley and Bradley Huggins of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office are D.A.R.E. instructors for the county’s fifth-grade classes.

  • After-school program enforces life skills

    With the help of an $81,900 grant from the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (DJJDP), students at Waccamaw, Shallotte and Leland middle schools are able to participate in a Communities in Schools (CIS) after-school delinquency prevention and intervention program free of charge.

    The grant allows students who score below proficiency in math and reading End of Grade (EOG) tests to participate in the after-school program free of charge.
