  • New school name still undecided

    The Brunswick County Board of Education is still playing the name game.

    Board members discussed naming the district’s new middle school David R. Sandifer Middle School after the late county commissioner at last month’s committee meetings. While all seemed in favor of the name, opinions changed at the board’s monthly meeting May 6.

    Board member Ray Gilbert said he had received numerous calls from Cedar Grove community members and thought the board ought to get more community input before naming the school.

  • Community colleges to no longer admit illegal immigrants

    Based on advice from the Office of the Attorney General, the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) will no longer admit undocumented or illegal immigrants into curriculum degree programs.

    The NCCCS sought the help of the attorney general only a few months after a memorandum was issued in December 2007 mandating the 58 community colleges in the state to admit all undocumented individuals at an out-of-state tuition rate.

    Kefalas graduates

    Ashleigh Kefalas, daughter of John and Carolyn Kefalas of Ash, was one of 170 members of the class of 2008 at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

    Kefalas received a bachelor of arts in biology with a specialized program of study in equine science during commencement exercises on May 3 on the college campus in Laurinburg.

    St. Andrews Presbyterian College is a four-year liberal arts and sciences college situated on 600 acres around a 70-acre lake in the Sandhills region of North Carolina.

  • BCC honors outstanding students

    Brunswick Community College celebrated outstanding student accomplishments at its annual Celebration of Champions on Friday, May 2.

    The recognition program acknowledges the hard work of more than 100 students in various academic programs.

    BCC President Dr. Stephen Greiner began the program by welcoming everyone and recognizing the faculty for helping the students succeed.

    Sharon Thompson, vice president for academic services, introduced each department and the lead instructor of each department spoke about their nominated students.

    The Continuing Education and Workforce Development Department offers short-term programs and classes for self-improvement, cultural enrichment, and academic achievement geared toward adults seeking intellectual stimulation, community involvement and social interaction, according to Karen Ladley, public information officer at the college.

  • Students are ROCAME champs

    Middle school and high school students from Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover and Pender school systems competed in math and science events at the annual ROCAME Regional Jamboree on April 26 at E. A. Laney High School in Wilmington.

    Brunswick County won the championship trophy (overall points) for the third consecutive year.

    The middle school event winners were:

    Write It Do It: second place, Hailey Winstead and Maranda Hansley (SBM)

    Egg Drop: first place, L. J. Webster and Alex Ray (Waccamaw)

  • Brunswick County students first to receive Polaris awards

    Student mentors, leaders, and those who display extraordinary character are the first-ever recipients of the Polaris Awards.

    The Brunswick County Schools Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and Commitment to Character Team (CTC) honored 15 students with the Polaris Awards, which were designed to recognize extraordinary character and achievements both in and outside the classroom.

    Sharon Amrol-Davis, district PAC president and CTC team chairperson, said these awards were a vision she wanted to make a reality.

  • BCC to increase student activity fees

    Brunswick Community College and community colleges across the state will increase student activity fees for the first time in 20 years.

    For a student taking seven or more credit hours, the fee will increase from $19 to $32.50 a semester—an increase of $13 per semester.

    Stephen Greiner, BCC president, said the decision to raise student activity fees was made by the Community College System. Individual schools cannot decide to make those changes.

  • Jessie Mae Monroe students participate in STARBASE

    The UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter touched down Friday at Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School in conjunction with the STARBASE program.

    STARBASE is a hands-on educational program focusing on science, math, technology, positive personal goal setting, substance abuse prevention and teamwork skills. Aimed at fifth-grade students, students learn aerodynamics, engage in flight simulation activity, test Newton’s three laws of motion, and build and launch rockets at the end of the program.
