Prices of milk, bread, produce and other grocery items continue to escalate and cause financial worry for Brunswick County Schools’ child nutrition services.

Tina Ward, director of child nutrition services, said last month the department was operating with a deficit of $107.919.49 as of Jan. 1.

To try and balance the budget and retain a three-month operating balance, Ward suggested the board raise student meal prices 20 cents for elementary and high schools and 30 cents for middle schools beginning with the 2008-2009 school year.

Since March 11, South Brunswick Middle School teacher Michele Rau’s class has been awaiting the arrival of chicks to hatch from eggs.

Rau, her assistant, Mrs. Jenkins, and students, Morgan Morgan, Travis Christman, Kelly Ulloa, Theresa Dagostino and Amber Mintz, have carefully turned the eggs three times a day in the incubator and studied about chickens during their class project.

After hatching, they took care of the chicks for a few days before they were picked up by Blair Green, Extension agent, 4-H Youth Development and Livestock.

A new building will soon take its place on Brunswick Community College’s campus in Supply.

College officials broke ground Tuesday on the new Early Childhood Education Center. The 11,000 square-foot building will provide four classrooms for instruction—five for childcare, a core area for administration and an outdoor learning environment.

ROCAME had its annual Brunswick County jamboree on March 29 at South Brunswick High School, the second consecutive year South Brunswick served as host.

Four middle schools and three high schools (more than 150 students, teachers and parents) participated in the math and science events.
