    It’s no secret Brunswick County has a history with hurricanes.

    Though it has been several years since residents have endured the wrath of a powerful storm like Floyd or Fran, officials at Brunswick County Emergency Services know the possibility exists.

    That’s why they hosted last week’s hurricane forums to prepare Brunswick County’s towns and residents for the possibility of inclement weather.

  • Brunswick County TDA, York receive state tourism awards

    The Brunswick County Tourism Development Authority has received a top honor at the Destination Marketing Association of North Carolina’s (DMANC) annual conference in Asheville.

    On June 2, the DMANC presented its 2007 Destination Marketing Achievement Awards. The Brunswick County TDA received the top award in the large-size bureau publication category for the 2008-2009 Brunswick County Visitors Guide, a printed promotional piece to encourage tourism in the area.

  • First 'Brunswick Cares' to aid replacement home projects June 19

    Jayne Mathews is hoping enough volunteers care to help with assorted housing projects during the first “Brunswick Cares” next Thursday.

    The June 19 event, a day of projects to aid residents of eight county-built replacement homes, is slated for the morning hours—8 a.m. to noon—at various home sites in Brunswick County.

  • Commissioners discuss budget, health insurance

    The Brunswick County Commissioners have decided to send letters to county employees seeking input on what kind of health insurance they would prefer, to increase the prices of meals sold to Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. and to increase the water rate for wholesale customers.

    The commissioners met in a budget workshop Monday afternoon to discuss the proposed 2008-2009 budget and make possible changes.

  • Minimum housing ordinance debated in Calabash

    CALABASH—Following debate, Calabash commissioners Tuesday night approved empowering the town planning and zoning board to develop a minimum housing ordinance.

    “There are some dwellings here in Calabash that are hardly livable, and yet we have no authority under our own ordinance to take any action,” commissioner Cecelia Herman said. “Therefore the planning and zoning board would like the board of commissioners to charge them with writing an ordinance on minimum housing.”

  • Calabash cancels fire services discussion, meets in closed session

    CALABASH—Town commissioners last week canceled a specially called meeting to discuss “fire services.”

    The session scheduled for Friday, June 6, was called two days earlier by Calabash Mayor Anthony Clemmons.

    When commissioners convened for the meeting at 4 p.m. Friday, Clemmons announced the discussion had been removed from the agenda upon the advice of a consulting attorney.

  • Holden Beach commissioners get look at new budget

    Holden Beach Town Manager David Hewett’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year keeps the town tax rate at 6.9 cents per $100 valuation, but the water rate will go up by 20 cents.

    Hewett presented his proposed $12,601,747 budget to Holden Beach commissioners last Wednesday during a budget workshop in the chapel fellowship hall.

    Holden Beach gets its water from the county. It would be the first rate hike in the water bill in several years.

  • Ocean Isle Beach man graduates from West Point

    He may have just graduated from a four-year university, but the next 10 years of his life are already planned out.

    James Hart, 21, of Ocean Isle Beach, recently graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, about 56 miles north of New York City. He is now a second lieutenant in the Army, where he will serve five years active duty and three years in the reserves after completing a two-year flight school.

  • One-cent tax increase proposed for Ocean Isle Beach

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH—The town administrator has proposed a 1-cent tax increase for the 2008-2009 fiscal year.

    When presented to the board of commissioners Tuesday morning, the general fund balance was based on a tax rate of 9 cents per $100 valuation with a .995 percent collection rate. That is up from the current 8-cent tax rate.

  • Shallotte planning board sets workshop with developer as a result of last-minute revisions

    SHALLOTTE—The town planning board has scheduled a workshop with a developer whose request for plat approval was shot down Tuesday night because of last-minute revisions.

    Instead of recommending to the board of aldermen final plat approval for phase 1A of Sea Wynde Plantation, planning board members voted to meet with developer Adam Lisk on June 26 before the July 1 board of aldermen meeting to work out the issues staff and the board members had with the original plat.
