  • Sloan files grievance with state Democratic Party

    Willie Sloan, who had the second-highest number of votes for the sheriff’s nomination last Saturday, has filed a grievance with the state Democratic Party.

    John Ingram was named the nominee after defeating Sloan by 13.5 votes.

    Sloan filed a grievance with the state Democratic Party Friday, saying the Brunswick County Democratic Party Executive Committee violated state party rules.

    N.C. Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Meek said Sloan alleges four of the people who voted in Saturday’s election also serve as elections officials at polling locations.

  • UPDATEFour suspects charged with area break-in

    Four suspects were arrested Thursday, charged with the early-morning break-in at the Provision Co. restaurant near Holden Beach.

    According to a sheriff’s office press release, an employee noticed a broken window, damaged items and a stolen flat-screen TV when the employee went to work and reported the break-in.

    Sheriff’s deputies conducting surveillance in the area noticed the suspects loading the TV in the back of the car.

  • Two arrested, charged with Realtor's shooting death

    Two suspects have been arrested and charged with the murder of 34-year-old Shallotte Realtor Adam Grant Bradshaw.

    Last Thursday, sheriff’s deputies arrested Craig Juan Bryant, 46, and Lora A. Moultrie, 46, both of 4395 Owendon Drive, Shallotte, for their alleged roles in Bradshaw’s murder.

    Bryant has been charged with murder. Moultrie has been charged with first-degree murder and felony conspiracy, according to chief deputy John Ingram.

  • Grappling with the cost of gas

    George Wendel filled his tank in the nick of time Monday morning, just before the price of gas went up another 11 cents.

    As the Carolina Shores resident pumped gas into his older model Cutlass Ciera at a Kangaroo convenience store in Little River, S.C., a store employee climbed the store’s humongous red and yellow sign on U.S. 17 to post the latest fuel hikes.

    Wendel paid $3.589 per gallon for regular gas at the store just across the state line from Brunswick County. When the employee descended back down to the ground, the price for regular had risen to $3.699.

  • Commissioners approve rezoning requests

    BOLIVIA—Members of the Brunswick County Planning Board approved two rezoning requests at their regular meeting Monday evening.

    A request to rezone 13.86 acres on Stone Chimney Road in Supply to low-density residential from its split-zoning designation of low-density residential and rural residential. Board members also approved the associated land-use plan amendment.

    Board members also approved a request to rezone 161.93 acres on Old Ocean Highway in Bolivia to rural residential from low-density residential, and the associated land-use plan amendment.

  • Davis picked as challenger for commissioner's seat

    Democrat Marion Davis will join Republican county commissioner Marty Cooke on November’s ballot to vie for the remaining two years of David Sandifer’s unexpired term.

    Members of the Brunswick County Democratic Party Executive Committee nominated Davis on Saturday to be the Democratic candidate for District 2 county commissioner.

    After longtime commissioner and board chairman Sandifer’s death April 4, executive committee members of both parties had 30 days to nominate a candidate to run for the remaining two years of Sandifer’s term.

  • Town of Calabash approves public hearing for 2008-2009 budget plans

    CALABASH—The town is readying its upcoming budget, as commissioners approved Tuesday night a June 10 public hearing for the 2008-2009 fiscal year.

    Town commissioner Forrest King, acting as finance officer, said the tax rate should remain at 7 cents per $100 of valuation for the projected $1,022,950 budget that takes effect July 1.

    The overview includes $193,000 from ad valorem taxes from real and personal property, based on the town’s current 94 percent collection rate.

  • Police, speed humps on budgetary agenda in Carolina Shores

    CAROLINA SHORES—Allocations for a future police department and speed humps are among budgetary details being mulled by town commissioners.

    At a May 5 budget workshop, commissioner Gere Dale said $50,000 is tentatively being set aside in “police department reserve” in the preliminary $1,475,844 proposed budget for 2008-2009, which takes effect July 1.

  • Holden Beach commissioners approve budget amendments

    HOLDEN BEACH—Town commissioners on Tuesday approved three budget amendments including two amendments for the town hall and Jordan Boulevard projects.

    Board members approved realigning $30,000 from the town hall contingency fund to meet stormwater requirements for the town hall project.

    The stormwater requirements are a “must-do” for the completion of the town hall project, town manager David Hewett said.

    The $30,000 needed to satisfy the stormwater requirements “should do it,” Hewett said.

  • Town to take over Ocean Isle Beach fire department

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH—The Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department will become a municipal department by July 1.

    Town commissioners unanimously voted Tuesday at their monthly meeting to make the department a municipal fire department. It will take over all assets and debts of the association.

    The board also voted to enter into a loan agreement with BB&T for $337,075 with an interest rate of 2.87 percent to finance the association’s outstanding debt.

    Commissioner Dean Walters said he was excited to see the town take this step.
