  • Public records policy tabled in Sunset Beach

    SUNSET BEACH—Town council has tabled consideration of a proposed public records policy and form following debate Monday night.

    Town councilwoman Carol Scott said she has problems with the proposed policy that has requirements “not legally required by [state] statute.

    “I’m not sure I’m ready tonight to pass this at all,” she said.

  • Grand opening for relocated Ocean Isle Beach Dollar General this weekend

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH—A grand opening for Dollar General, located on Beach Drive, is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, April 9.

    The first 50 shoppers at the store’s grand opening will receive a $10 gift card, and the first 200 will receive a Dollar General tote bag.

    The new, freestanding store located at 6675 Beach Drive SW replaces the Dollar General that was located on Seaside Road. Spokesperson Mike Machak said the store had been in operation since 1999 but is now closed. The new location is about 3 miles away.

  • County settles with longtime former DSS director for $190,000

    BOLIVIA—He was fired for workplace sexual harassment last year, but former DSS director Jamie Orrock will now be allowed to have resigned or retired rather than been fired.

    In October 2010, Orrock, who helmed the county’s Department of Social Services for nearly 30 years, was terminated for workplace sexual harassment.

    During the Brunswick County Community Watch’s March meeting on Monday, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Bert Reaves with the crime prevention unit spoke about ways to prevent identity theft and scams as well as the importance of serial numbers.
