    South Brunswick slipped past West Brunswick 2-1 Thursday.

    Sheena Suttlemyre scored the goal for the Lady Trojans, and Mary Dorn had the assist.

    Both West goal keeper Ariel Gravino and South Brunswick goalie Kat Adams had eight saves.

    “Our players played really well,” West coach Laura Libero said. “The players we brought in there to play in the absence of our regular players did a tremendous job. We just have to learn how to play the whole 80 minutes and finish the game.”

    South Brunswick 8 East Columbus 0

    South Brunswick scored eight runs on five hits and allowed only one hit in its 8-0 shutout of East Columbus April 15.

    “That is back-to-back one-hitters for Ryan Morgan and Ryan Waldrep (in relief),” South coach Lee Shelton said.

    Morgan, the winning pitcher, also hit a grand slam.

    “Ryan Morgan pitched outstanding,” Shelton said. “That was another great outing by him.”

    Morgan also picked up 4 RBI with one swing of the bat in the first inning.

    North Brunswick beat Trask 4-0 on April 16.

    “We made excellent passes and moved the ball through the defense quickly,” North coach Amy Keeter said.

    “We scored three goals in the first half: Christy Morris assisted by Shauni Garcia, Abigail Hernandez unassisted and Shauni Garcia unassisted. Abigail Hernandez put another shot in goal assisted by Christy Morris before time ran out.”

  • Governor's debate draws four Republicans, one Democrat

    Four Republican gubernatorial candidates squared off Thursday night at the Stand Up and Vote Candidates Forum.

    But only one Democrat showed up for the event.

    Democratic candidates Bev Purdue and Richard Moore were no-shows at the event, despite being invited, forum host Curtis Wright said.

    Col. Dennis Nielsen, the lone Democrat, took the stage alone to answer questions from the debate panel and from audience members.

    Nielsen tackled several topics, including immigration, education and government corruption.

    The Republicans had a more lively debate.

  • Food pantry ministry implements tithing plan

    SHALLOTTE—Saturday morning, Bill Negron stood at the front of the fellowship hall at Camp United Methodist Church and announced volunteers would pass an offering plate.

    It wasn’t a usual occurrence for residents attending this devotional session that precedes the weekly food pantry distribution, but Negron said an offering will be an integral part of the newly launched Cornerstone Ministry, a nonprofit aimed at aiding the food pantry and its recipients.

  • Beacon, others to sponsor N.C. governors' candidate forum

    Republican and Democratic candidates for governor will square off April 17 at the “2008 North Carolina Governor’s Stand Up and Vote Candidates Forum.”

    The forum takes place at the Schwartz Center on the campus of Cape Fear Community College, Wilmington.

    The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with a “meet and greet” reception, with the candidate forum beginning at 6 p.m.

    Republican candidates have from 6-7:30 p.m. to answer questions, and a second segment for Democratic candidates is slated for 7:30-9 p.m.

  • Brunswick Housing coalition plans workshop

    The Brunswick Housing Coalition will host a regional workshop to introduce the concept of inclusionary zoning to the community from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, April 22, at Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation, 795 Ocean Hwy. (U.S. 17 S.) in Supply.

    Anita Brown-Graham, director of the Institute for Emerging Issues at North Carolina State University, will be the presenter for the workshop.

    All persons interested in workforce/affordable housing are urged to attend. There is no charge for the workshop. Donations of office supplies are welcome.

  • Page resigns as parks and rec director to work for sports lighting company

    George Page has resigned as Brunswick County Parks and Recreation director after 11 years. He will take a job in the private sector and leaves behind a long list of accomplishments.

    Page’s last day was Tuesday, and he said this week he is proud of what he and his staff accomplished in the last 11 years, especially bringing a Special Olympics program to the county, expanding the county’s parks and obtaining grant funding for three new parks.

    Page said it was difficult to leave, but he was offered a job he couldn’t pass up.

  • Memorial to honor seven fire victims

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH—The seven college students who died in an Ocean Isle Beach house fire will be remembered with a memorial erected in their honor.

    A steel cross and a granite plaque will be placed at the base of the Odell Williamson Bridge in front of the Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department.

    A memorial service for the victims’ families is set for 3 p.m. May 16. Town administrator Daisy Ivey said letters inviting the parents and families were mailed last week.

  • Farmers' Market opens Saturday

    The Shallotte Farmers' Market will open at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at a new location—the Shallotte Town Hall parking lot. It will stay open until noon.

    This is the first year the Downtown Shallotte Committee decided to expand the market’s season into spring, according to Chairman Walt Eccard.

    Opening day will include the following vendors:

    •Michael Hubbard, Bolivia: Palm trees and vegetables.

    •Eileen Brown and Carol Gentile, Shallotte: Aprons, bags, jewelry, dog scarves.

    •Willie Richardson, Ash: Fresh vegetables.
