  • Council approves buying fire truck

    SUNSET BEACH—Town Council on Monday approved a bid waiver and purchase of a $785,000, 100-foot platform ladder fire truck for the town fire department.

    In February, Sunset Beach Fire Chief Chris Barbee said the matter was a “limited time offer” that had been extended by the fire truck’s manufacturer, E-ONE of Ocala, Fla., for the town to “piggyback” onto a previous bid contract from the city of Rochester, N.H.

    South Brunswick blasted two home runs on its way to a 9-6 win over South Columbus on April 2.

    Ben Maggard hit a three-run homer in the third, while Johnathan Marvin slugged the Cougars’ other homer.

    South led 5-1 after three but starting making errors and lost the lead.

    “We made four errors in the fourth inning, and South Columbus took advantage of it,” South coach Lee Shelton said.

  • West Brunswick Sports Round-up

    West Brunswick’s baseball team knocked off previously unbeaten Hoggard 2-1 in Wilmington last week.

    “Ethan Cox pitched a gem, we got some key hits at the right time, and we had zero errors,” said West coach Mike Alderson.

    “Ethan pitched a 2-hitter. Josh Powell went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run and got walked. Pat Kamfolt got a double in the gap.”

    The win gives West a 3-1 record in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference and 7-3 record overall. Hoggard drops to 5-1 in league play and 12-1 overall.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's deputies allege political coercion

    They say Ronald Hewett forced them to campaign for him, participate in fundraisers and do physical labor to benefit his bid for sheriff.

    But Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies have had enough.

    Amid allegations of political coercion, intoxication at crime scenes, extortion and other charges, Brunswick County Sheriff Ronald Hewett has been suspended. He was temporarily relieved of his responsibilities as sheriff last Thursday. A hearing to permanently remove Hewett from office was continued until May 5.

    Local government officials want to know if the North Carolina Ports Authority can offer guarantees the proposed new port won’t ruin roads, the environment and the quality of life residents now enjoy.

    Brunswick County Commissioner May Moore said this week that last Friday’s meeting with officials from the authority did not provide answers to the questions she’s been asking about the new terminal planned for the Southport waterfront.
