  • Who will run the local department?

    CALABASH—What does the future hold for the Calabash Volunteer Fire Department?

    That was a subject of debate at a Carolina Shores budget retreat last week.

    Carolina Shores town commissioner Gere Dale, who represents his town on the fire department board, broached the topic, drawing fire from Mayor Steve Selby after suggesting one option is for the town to take it over.

    “I think a financial feasibility study is not only necessary but I think essential,” said Dale, who sought commissioners’ comments.

  • Brunswick County Chamber presents 2007 awards

    SUNSET BEACH—Pete and Dotty Callahan have been named Brunswick County’s 2007 Citizens of the Year.

    The duo, who donate their time visiting residents of a local nursing home, were honored Tuesday at the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce annual awards luncheon at Sea Trail Conference Center.

    The Callahans are ministers to the homebound of St. Brendan Catholic Church and pay regular visits to Autumn Care in Shallotte. There they celebrate Mass and eat meals with residents. It’s something they’ve been doing since 1989.

  • Low-impact development, association's goals presented at Realtors' annual luncheon

    SUPPLY—Low-impact development and other issues facing Realtors were discussed Tuesday at the Brunswick County Association of Realtors’ annual impact luncheon at the association’s new digs on Stone Chimney Road.

    Steve Candler, the association’s governmental affairs director, presented to association members and elected officials the group’s goals and issues for the upcoming legislative term.

  • Hospital authority members table health needs survey

    SUPPLY—Brunswick County Hospital Authority members have agreed to table a proposal for a countywide health needs survey.

    At their regular meeting last Wednesday, board members voted to table the survey until they can gather more information about two previous surveys conducted by the county health department and Novant Health.

    Ron Anderson, the authority’s vice-chairman, said the proposed survey would identify any health needs in the county that are unmet.

  • Board considers rezoning, special exceptions

    BOLIVIA—Members of the Brunswick County Planning Board considered the following items at their regular meeting Monday night:

    •Board members tabled until April 14 a special exception for the First Tee Learning Center on Tarklin Court, Shallotte. The petitioner requested its consideration be tabled for the education facility expansion. The request was previously tabled at the board’s Feb. 11 meeting.

  • Calabash approves seasonal ice cream cow

    CALABASH—After much debate, Calabash commissioners have decided a local ice cream shop can have its cow for another season.

    At issue is a promotional, jumbo-sized Mayfield Dairy cow statue that Vivian Sweeney, owner of the Back Porch Ice Cream Shoppe in Harbour Court, first brought to town last Eastertime.

    Town officials later informed her the cow, which remained on display for about eight days, was in violation of the town’s sign ordinance.

  • Contract post office slated to open Thursday

    CALABASH—At the back of Calabash Ace Hardware, assistant manager Bob Crawford bustled behind the new post office counter Monday, preparing for its opening.

    Beyond the paint section, lawn furniture and aisles laden with tools and plumbing supplies, Calabash’s new contract postal unit is slated to open Thursday, March 13, inside the store at 9030 Beach Drive.

    The new CPU is described as full-service, offering a full line of postal products and services, including postage stamps, Express and Priority Mail services and packaging products.

  • 'Messy' river getting a cleaning in Calabash

    CALABASH—Sure, it yields fish, but have you ever wondered what else might be in the Calabash River?

    Brothers Sam and Jackie Thomas are finding out this week as clean the waterway renowned for its fishing boats, seafood restaurants and scenic views.

    Another, less pretty scene lurks just beneath the surface.

    A discarded mountain bike, piles of wiring and a jumbo-sized piece of Styrofoam are among items retrieved from the muck and water since the two launched their clean-up for the town of Calabash on Monday.

  • Security, stormwater among Carolina Shores priorities for next budget

    CAROLINA SHORES—A long list of priorities dominated town commissioners’ annual budget retreat March 5, most of them items that have been discussed before.

    Commissioners discussed setting aside money for town security, stormwater diversion projects, emergency management, buying laptop computers for the town’s two building inspectors, additional staffing, replacing town equipment, ETJ expansion and possible zoning changes and the future of the Calabash Volunteer Fire Department.
