  • Former coach resigns

    A teacher who has been with Brunswick County Schools for more than 27 years has resigned.

    Mike Dumas, a physical education teacher at North Brunswick High School, resigned effective March 4. Dumas was on paid suspension since Nov. 28, 2007. Details about the nature of the suspension have not been made public.

    The announcement was made as part of the Brunswick County Board of Education’s regular monthly meeting Tuesday night.

  • Assistant fired

    A Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School teacher assistant has been terminated.

    The Brunswick County Board of Education voted to accept personnel changes Tuesday night. One of the changes included terminating Anna Stanley, a teacher assistant and bus driver at Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School.

    Terry Chestnutt, assistant superintendent of human resources, said the board was unable to comment on the nature of Stanley’s termination due to general statute personnel laws.

  • More parents unhappy with Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School

    Carrie Stewart removed her child from Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School last year. Her daughter was diagnosed with a seizure disorder and often missed school due to her symptoms.

    Stewart said the school denied her daughter the medical testing she needed, but said her daughter would not pass the third grade due to the number of days she missed. Teachers also told her daughter she was going to have to repeat the grade, she said.

  • Gilbert now allowed inside school

    Ray Gilbert is now allowed inside Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School.

    The Brunswick County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to permit Gilbert into the school for functions in which his children are involved.

    According to a resolution the board passed in December, Gilbert had been banned from all school property except the central office to conduct board business and the carpool lane at Jessie Mae Monroe to pick up his children.

  • Projects at county complex moving on track

    LELAND—Several construction and expansion projects planned for the Brunswick County Complex in Bolivia are on track and nearing completion.

    The new administration building is almost done, county manager Marty Lawing told commissioners at their three-day budget retreat last week at Magnolia Greens.

    When the new administration building is complete, it will feature new commissioners chambers.

  • Planning department wants historical survey

    LELAND—Two county agencies have told Brunswick County Commissioners they want to see a comprehensive historical survey for Brunswick County.

    At the board’s annual budget retreat last week, planning director Leslie Bell and libraries director Reecie Tate said their departments want to participate in updating the county’s historical survey last recorded in January 1976.

    The survey, which would be spearheaded by the planning department, is expected to cost around $100,000. It should be completed by June 2009.

  • Brunswick County to receive emergency food and shelter funds

    Brunswick County has been chosen to receive $48,872 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county by a national board, according to a news release.

    The board, chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), consists of representatives from The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities, USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. and United Way of America.

  • Brunswick County candidate filings closed; final candidates announced

    Candidate filings have closed for the November 2008 election. Candidate filing opened at noon Monday, Feb. 11 and closed at noon Friday, Feb. 29.

    The following candidates have filed for office:

    N.C. State Senate

    •R.C. Soles Jr. (incumbent), Democrat, Tabor City

    •Bettie Fennell, Republican, Rocky Point

    N.C. House of Representatives (District 17)

    •Bonner Stiller (incumbent), Republican, Oak Island

    •Vernon Ward, Democrat, Shallotte

    N.C. House of Representatives (District 20)

  • TDA to soup up database, provide personalized info

    Brunswick County Tourism Development Authority members say they want to better utilize their Web site to provide more personalized attention to potential visitors. They want to make sure visitors remember the Brunswick islands when they plan their vacations.

    TDA members took the first step toward meeting that goal at last Wednesday’s meeting, voting unanimously to begin the process of obtaining new software, a new employee and a new way of responding to inquiries beginning July 1.

  • Board steps in at town hall

    CALABASH—Who’s in charge at town hall?

    Since the firing of former town administrator Donna Prince on Feb. 20, town commissioners have been pitching in to oversee business.

    Last week, they also appointed deputy clerk Kelley Southward to serve as interim town clerk but have not indicated when or if a replacement for Prince will be hired.

    Monday, just inside the entry to town hall on Persimmon Road, a sign on a glass window marked the darkened former administrator’s office where Southward will now be working.
