Ellen Granade was looking forward to the next nine months after finding out she was pregnant with her second son in late February 2008. While consumed with the joys of a second pregnancy, she never expected to be carrying a baby and battling breast cancer simultaneously.
A month after finding out she was pregnant, Granade, then 31, found a lump in her breast while lying in bed. After an ultrasound, a mammogram and an unsuccessful needle aspiration, the doctors decided to surgically remove the lump. Granade was 15 weeks pregnant at the time.
