  • Aldermen seek Sunnyside estimates

    SHALLOTTE—Town aldermen want to know how much it will cost to finish the long-expected renovations on Sunnyside School so they can discuss it and possibly include it in the town’s 2008-2009 budget.

    Aldermen met with members of the Save Old Sunnyside Committee at last week’s board retreat at The Purple Onion Annex in Shallotte. They asked committee members to bring back estimates for completing renovations for all the uses planned for the building—a meeting room, a historical museum and a replica of an old classroom.

  • Mandatory sewer discussed in Sunset Beach

    SUNSET BEACH—Planning board members are discussing a sewer use ordinance with the county.

    If approved, it would include a requirement for mandatory connection for all private wastewater treatment systems in town.

    “It’s very good to have for environmental concerns, and it addresses the practicality of funding the system,” town administrator Gary Parker said.

    North Carolina statute allows private users to continue to use their septic tanks.

  • Lady Trojans survive playoff thriller

    SHALLOTTE—West Brunswick seniors Miranda Jenrette and Jordan Clear were not ready for their high school basketball careers come to an end Monday night.

    So they did what they needed to ensure they would play at least one more game.

    The duo combined for 34 points, 15 rebounds and two clutch baskets as the Lady Trojans defeated Washington 54-52 in overtime in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs.

  • North girls march on

    LELAND—The North Brunswick Lady Scorpions swarmed Fairmont Monday night and moved into the second round of the Class 2A high school girls’ basketball playoffs.

    The 66-52 victory sent the Lady Scorpions (16-9) on the road for Wednesday’s second-round meeting at Croatan (25-1) with the winner advancing to Friday’s sectional title game.

    Croatan, the East Central Conference top seed, beat Orange 70-43 Monday.

  • South Brunswick wrestler finishes fifth in state

    Brunswick County athletes failed to win a single medal at the N.C. High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Championships last weekend in Winston-Salem.

    South Brunswick senior Sammy Roundtree had the best finish of the 12 local wrestlers who competed in the tournament. He placed fifth at 125 pounds in the 1A/2A classification.

    West Brunswick senior heavyweight Dixon Floyd was the only other wrestler from the county to win more than one match. He went 2-2 to finish among the top 10 in the 3A classification.

  • Dolphins get walk-off win

    SHALLOTTE—You’ve heard of Mister October. Meet Mister February.

    Brunswick Community College freshman Derek Cozzolino is quickly establishing a reputation as a clutch hitter for the first-year Dolphins.

    On Sunday, Cozzolino had his second walk-off game-winning hit of the season in a 3-2 decision against visiting Cecil College. Through five innings, the Seahawks from North East, Md., held a 3-1 lead.

  • Lady Cougars fall in playoffs

    Shooting off to an 18-0 first quarter lead, Holmes dispatched South Brunswick from the Class 2A high school girls’ basketball playoffs Monday with a 61-46 victory at Edenton.

    Gerrisha Moore had a game-high 27 points for the Lady Aces (20-7), the No. 2 seed from the Northeastern Conference. They moved on to the second round to face Red Springs (22-4), the top seed from the Southeastern Conference, on Wednesday.

    Junior guard Brittany Spivey led the Lady Cougars (9-16) with 12 points.

  • Scorpions ousted in semifinals

    The North Brunswick High School boys’ basketball season ended last Thursday with a loss to East Columbus in the semifinals of the Waccamaw 1A/2A Conference Tournament.

    After opening the tournament with an upset of No. 3 seed Trask, the sixth-seeded Scorpions got a dose of their own medicine in the semifinals with a loss to the seventh-seeded Gators.

    East Columbus led 32-30 at halftime and pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Scorpions 19-13.

  • West eliminated from conference tournament

    The West Brunswick High School girls’ and boys’ basketball teams both made an early exit from the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference Tournament.

    West Brunswick’s girls suffered a 61-41 loss at New Hanover, and the boys dropped a 58-47 decision at Hoggard in last Tuesday’s opening round.

    In the girls’ game, No. 4 seed New Hanover outscored the No. 5 seed Lady Trojans in every quarter.

    Morgan King scored a game-high 22 points and Tysheia Robinson added 14 for New Hanover (14-10).

  • South girls, boys defeated in tournament's first round

    The South Brunswick High School girls’ and boys’ basketball teams were eliminated in the first round of the Waccamaw 1A/2A Conference Tournament last week at Lake Waccamaw.

    South Brunswick’s girls, seeded No. 5 in the tournament, suffered a 38-34 loss to No. 4 seed North Brunswick on Monday. The Lady Scorpions were eliminated with an 80-49 loss to top seed Pender on Wednesday.

    South Brunswick’s boys, the No. 4 seed, suffered a 60-57 overtime loss to No. 5 seed Whiteville in a first-round game on Tuesday.
