  • Ocean Isle Beach man dies in car wreck

     SHALLOTTE—An Ocean Isle Beach man was killed Wednesday, September 21.

    Gerald (Jerry) Oakley, 83, was fatally wounded during a two car wreck on N.C.179 in Shallotte.

    According to the Shallotte Police Department investigation report, the wreck occurred around 9:12 p.m. Oakley attempted to turn left onto N.C. 179 from Brierwood Drive when his vehicle struck an oncoming car.

    “Vehicle one failed to yield right of way for vehicle two, causing collision,” reads the report.

  • 2011 Oyster Festival artwork unveiled

     OCEAN ISLE BEACH—The table is set against the backdrop of the Intracoastal Waterway. The Pepsi is chilled, the oysters are roasted, and the guitar is waiting.

    This year’s 2011 Oyster Festival artwork was unveiled last Wednesday by the Oyster Festival committee and the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce. This year’s artwork created by artist Keith White portrays a down-home oyster roast. White has been named the official artist of the 2011 Oyster Festival.

    Last Wednesday, the Shallotte Fire Department recognized individual achievements and celebrated each fireman in the department.

  • Suspect wanted for Supply drive-by shooting in mobile home park

    Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office have identified a suspect in Wednesday night’s drive-by shooting at Stevenson Mobile Home Park in Supply.

    Justin Antwain Garvin is wanted in connection with the shooting.

    Garvin, 19, of 379 Little Macedonia Road, Supply, is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling.

  • Begin the conversation before it's too late

     SUPPLY—The statistics are overwhelming—one in one person will die.

    The reality of death isn’t one most Americans want to face, but it is a reality everyone must confront at some point.

    The Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter wants to help get the conversation started.

    “Its something most of us really don’t want to deal with and talk about,” said Jason Clamme, director of community outreach. “But end of life is going to be a part of every life.”

  • Ride cancer into the ground

     SHALLOTTE—There is one goal for a local group on Saturday, Oct. 8—to ride cancer into the ground.

    The 2011 motorcycle benefit ride will be the third annual event for the Let’s Ride Cancer into the Ground Foundation. The ride was founded in honor of Diane Sandoval, a 6-year breast cancer survivor. The money raised from the first two events was donated to help fund research for the cure.

  • Fall bike rally

     SHALLOTTE—Motorcycles and motorcycle enthusiasts will descend upon Shallotte this weekend for the annual Beach House Harley-Davidson Fall Beach Rally.

    The semi-annual event draws hundreds of people from all over the Southeast. During the five-day event, Beach House Harley-Davidson at 4919 Ocean Highway in Shallotte welcomes the entire public to come out and talk about bikes, shop, enjoy entertainment and make new friends with similar interests.

    The event features a tent sale and a wide variety of vendors.

  • Ocean Isle Beach Crime Report

     The Ocean Isle Beach Police Department investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from police incident and arrest reports.

    •Misdemeanor larceny and communicating threats at the pier; subject was arrested.

    •Anthony Kevin Richardson, 47, of 1592 Pelican Place, Shallotte, was arrested for outstanding warrants after an investigation at the pier.
