  • Calabash helps battle S.C. house fire

    Extra fire and rescue units, including members of the Calabash Fire Department, were called to a house fire Monday afternoon, May 18, near Little River, S.C.

    A passing Horry County, S.C., police officer spotted the fire about 5 p.m. at the single-family house at 232 S.C. 57 N., also known as Wampee Road, about four miles south of the state line.

    About 5:10 p.m., a second alarm summoned more units, including Calabash, to the scene, said Brian Van Aernem, spokesman for Horry County Fire Rescue.

  • Sunset Beach Police Department June

    Sunset Beach police investigated the following incidents.

    June 14

    Found property in the area of a gun shop in Seaside. Property was returned to victim.

    June 15

    Theft of $210 from purse at Head to Toe Salon.

    Breaking and entering and damage to floor tiles at a new home under construction at 1307 E. Main St.

    June 16

    Property damage; someone broke out rear window of a vehicle parked in driveway at 420 Second St.

    Sunset Beach police investigated the following incidents.

    June 8

    Unknown children threw rocks, causing damage to vehicle in an area of Canal Street.

    June 10

    Larceny of a wallet from a vehicle on Chandlers Lane.

    June 11

    Theft of a hand power pole from a boat on 30th Street.

  • Rip Current Awareness Week observed

    North Carolina and South Carolina observed Rip Current Awareness Week, June 4-10.

    Rip current and beach safety information was sent through National Weather Service Wilmington social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, during the week.

    Two interns with New Hanover County Emergency Management will be stationed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at Fort Fisher Aquarium during World Ocean Day and Friday, June 9, at Fort Fisher State Park to provide rip current information to the public.

  • Sunset Beach Police Deartment May 31-June 3, 2017

    The Sunset Beach Police Department made the following arrests.

    May 31

    Jaime Urbanski, 39, of Stone Cutter Drive was arrested on an outstanding driving while impaired warrant.

    June 1

    Amber Mintz 18, of Shallotte Point Loop Road, Shallotte, was arrested on a larceny by employee charge.

    June 2

    Chelsey L. Moore 26, of Ellison Court, Greenville, was cited on charges of simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

  • Calabash Fire Department, May 2017

    During the month of May, the Calabash Fire Department responded to 164 calls: two structure fires, three woods/brush fires, eight fire alarms, 11 motor vehicle accidents, 31 public assistance, two mutual aid and 107 EMS first-response calls.

    Call for service; someone called in orders to Angelo’s Pizzeria and Bistro and did not pick them up.

    Financial card fraud; using victim’s debit card to make a purchase of $72.83.

    May 17

    John Christian Blasingame, 41, of Hawthorne Loop was arrested on a misdemeanor assault inflicting serious bodily injury warrant.

    Injury to real property by losing control of a vehicle and causing $500 in property damage to landscaping on Lincoln Road.

    May 16

    Earl Thomas Bullard Jr., 41, was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant.

    Shoplifting of jewelry worth $115 from Belk at Shallotte Crossing Parkway.

    May 17

    Rayshawn Antiquan Miller, 24, was arrested on felony heroin trafficking and maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for sale of a controlled substance warrants.

    Steven Anthony Dumas, 33, of Lake Shore Drive was arrested on felony charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and probation violation.

    Larceny of $350 in tools from a construction site on Mill Creek Loop.

    Breaking and entering and larceny of sunglasses worth $300 from a motor vehicle parked on Pine Grove Court.
