  • Calabash helps battle S.C. house fire

    Extra fire and rescue units, including members of the Calabash Fire Department, were called to a house fire Monday afternoon, May 18, near Little River, S.C.

    A passing Horry County, S.C., police officer spotted the fire about 5 p.m. at the single-family house at 232 S.C. 57 N., also known as Wampee Road, about four miles south of the state line.

    About 5:10 p.m., a second alarm summoned more units, including Calabash, to the scene, said Brian Van Aernem, spokesman for Horry County Fire Rescue.

    During the month of January, 2016, the Calabash Fire Department responded to 157 calls: five structure fires, two woods/brush fires, a vehicle fire, six fire alarms, five motor vehicle accidents, two investigations, 15 public assistance, an other and 120 EMS first-response calls.
