  • Brunswick County 911 center experiences outage

    BOLIVIA—The Brunswick County 911 Center experienced a brief power outage last Wednesday after an electrical storm damaged two pieces of equipment.

    Brunswick County Emergency Services Director Anthony Marzano said two pieces of equipment at the 911 center failed around 3 a.m. Wednesday, April 11. Officials believe the outage was caused by a powerful electrical storm, most likely a power surge over the phone line.

    Non-emergency phone lines were also affected, Marzano said.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's Office crime report

    Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office investigated the following incidents last week:

    •Death investigation on Beach Drive in Ocean Isle Beach on April 15; 74- year-old male died of natural causes.

    •Death investigation on SW Grey Bridge Road in Shallotte on April 15; 64-year-old female died of natural causes.

    •Fraud by phone on Birchbark Court in Winnabow was reported on April 13.

  • No injuries reported in school bus fire

     

    It wasn’t the type of excitement students had hoped for when they were out of classes Tuesday afternoon.

    Forty students, staff members and chaperons of Brunswick County Schools were evacuated from a bus when it caught fire.

    The Brunswick County Schools activities bus carrying Leland Middle School seventh-grade students was evacuated at the corner of George II Hwy (N.C. 87) and Funston Road in Winnabow within a matter of minutes.

  • Break-ins, hit-and-run in Sunset Beach

    Sunset Beach police investigated the following incidents reported in the past week.

    •Breaking-and-entering and larceny into a storage room under a beach house were reported April 8. A fishing cart, two sets of golf club and assorted fishing equipment were reported stolen.

    •A report for harassing phone calls and communicating threats was reported April 6 in the Sugar Sands area of Sea Trail.

  • Shallotte Crime Report

    The Shallotte Police Department investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from police incident and arrest reports.

    •Counterfeit currency at Advance Auto Parts; suspect attempted to pass a counterfeit $50 bill.

    •Lost wallet at a Main Street store; victim misplaced his wallet.

    •Property damage in the West Brunswick High School parking lot; victim’s tire was cut.

    •Kourtney Nicole Johnson, 21, of 4070 Ruby Way, was charged with larceny.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Team

    The special operations team at the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office includes the K-9 enforcement team and Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) Team.

    The ACE Team is a support unit whose primary functions are traffic enforcement and assisting in the apprehension of drug traffickers in the county.

    From April 4-9, special operations set up checkpoints on N.C. 87, N.C. 133, N.C. 211 and Oxpen Road.

    Deputies issued 100 total charges and citations, including four driving while impaired (DWI) charges and 51 speed violations.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's Office drug report

    Agents with the Brunswick County Vice Narcotics Unit made the following arrests last week:

    •William Tyler Miller, 24, of 58 North Side Drive, Shallotte, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Miller was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center, where he was placed under a $5,000 secured bond.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office crime report

    Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office investigated the following incidents from April 4-9, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident logs:

    •Littering on Stone Chimney Road in Supply.

    •Larceny on Beach Drive in Ocean Isle Beach; suspect stole farm and garden vehicles from victim.

    •Vandalism on River Road in Leland; suspect damaged a Redbox.

    •Vandalism on Mount Misery Road in Leland.

  • Leland man arrested for raping woman at assisted living facility

    A 68-year-old Leland man has been arrested for raping a woman at an assisted living facility.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Del Routh said detectives arrested Merlin Alford, 68, of 1935 Lincoln Road, Leland, on Sunday, April 8.

    Alford has been charged with second-degree rape.

    He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center, where he was placed under a $100,000 secured bond.

  • Shallotte Crime Report

    •Vandalism and larceny of fuel in the Lawn Doctor’s parking lot; suspect cut a fuel line.

    •Vandalism at Exxon gas station on Whiteville Road; a vehicle caught fire.
