  • Break-ins, thefts investigated

    Sunset Beach police investigated the following incidents this past weekend. All information is taken directly from police incident and arrest reports.

    • On July 20, a breaking and entering was reported at a residence on Indigo Circle. Someone forced a door open but nothing was taken.

    • Police investigated a misdemeanor and larceny reported on the beach. Two young men picked up a beach bag and ran off with it. The bag was later found stashed behind a house on North Shore Drive. A set of keys was missing.

  • Holden Beach crime report

    Holden Beach police officers investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from police incident reports.

    •Simple assault on Raleigh Street; a 16-year-old victim and a 41-year-old victim reported being assaulted.

    •Breaking and entering, larceny and property damage on Seaview Drive; suspect stole a Frisbee, a top-load freezer, tie wraps, dust masks and spray paint from victim’s home. The case was solved and victim declined prosecution.

  • Shallotte crime report

    Shallotte police charged the following people and investigated the following incidents last week. All information is taken directly from police reports.

    •Joshua Matthew Potter, 27, of Holden Beach Road, Supply; charged with being drunk and disruptive at the Lowes Foods parking lot. A patrolman was dispatched to the store in reference to an intoxicated driver. He found Potter unresponsive in the back seat. When he finally woke him up, Potter was being rude and started to yell and curse. He was placed in the Brunswick County Detention Center on a $500 secured bond.

  • Leland crime report

    Leland police officers investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from patrol activity reports.

    •After being stopped for speeding 100 mph in a 55 mph zone, Christopher Shane Barr, 35, 7997 Ocean Highway, Leland, was charged with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked and careless and reckless driving.

    •Larceny on Grey Moss Court; suspect took three personal checks from victim’s mailbox and attempted to cash the checks in Wilmington.

  • Wanted scam artist targets local businesses

    A woman claiming to represent an advertising company has bilked several local businesses, selling billboard space she did not have access to and leaving with money from business owners, according to local business owners and police reports.

    Justin Fulford of Fulford Heating and Air on the Holden Beach causeway said recently the woman, who identified herself as Kristal Hill, “was very professional and had us convinced that others in the area had also done billboards with her.”

  • S.C. kidnapping suspect nabbed in Brunswick

    A North Myrtle Beach, S.C., man is in custody at the Brunswick County Detention Center awaiting extradition to South Carolina.

    Marco Maurice Vaught, 25, of 1264 Oyster Lane, is in custody on a $200,000 bond after being arrested Saturday evening in Brunswick County.

    Loris, S.C., Police Chief Joseph Vaught said an Amber Alert was issued early Saturday morning for Evette Vaught and her 2-year-old daughter Namia, who authorities believed were taken by Marco Vaught.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week. All information is taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports.

    •Breaking and entering and property damage on Fairway 9 Court, Supply; suspect cut victim’s screen, entered house and left out backdoor.

    •Breaking and entering and property damage on Village Point Road, Shallotte; suspect kicked open victim’s backdoor and stole three 12-packs of beer.

  • Drug agents arrest two suspects in drug-trafficking organization

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit recently arrested two men they allege are involved in a Hispanic-based drug trafficking organization.

    Twenty-one year old suspects Damien Cruz and Saul Dominquez Jaramillo were arrested after drug agents and Leland Police officers executed a search warrant last Friday at two Leland-area residences following months-long investigation.

  • Leland Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department receives certifications

    The Leland Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department (LVFRD) was recently certified to provide three rescue procedures by the North Carolina Association of Rescue and Emergency and Medical Services.

    The department was certified as a provider of heavy rescue, high angle rescue and open water (still water) rescue.

    The new certifications make the Leland Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department the only state-certified heavy rescue provider in Brunswick County. The department was required to meet specific standards of training and equipment to qualify for each certification.
