  • Fatal wreck on N.C. 904

    A Shallotte man was killed last week when his moped struck a tractor on N.C. 904 near Sunset Beach.

    Just before 4 p.m. June 2, Keith Howard Lofton, 58, of 1059 Radford Way, was traveling north on his moped at about 35 mph, according to 1st Sgt. J.O. Holmes, of the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

    Lofton was driving in the roadway and apparently didn’t see the tractor with a bush hog on the back of it. The bush hog was partially on the shoulder of the road and moving at about 15 mph.

  • Alleged cocaine trafficker indicted

    The U.S. Attorney’s Office has indicted Leland resident Pablo Mora Espinoza on one count of possessing cocaine with the intent to distribute and one count of an illegal alien in possession of firearms, according to a press release from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

    Brunswick County Drug Enforcement Unit agents first arrested Espinoza in February on trafficking cocaine charges after an investigation in conjunction with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

  • Brunswick man sentenced federally

    A Navassa man has pleaded guilty in federal court to possession with the intent to distribute more than 50 grams of crack cocaine.

    Damian Laverne Jennings, 32, of 220 Broadway St., was sentenced May 14 to 120 months and five years supervised release minimum.

    Brunswick County Drug Enforcement Unit agents first arrested Jennings on multiple counts of distributing cocaine in early 2007.

    The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office worked in conjunction with local prosecutor Chris Thomas, who is cross-sworn as a Special U.S. Attorney.

  • Crime rates mixed across state; Brunswick County sees drop

    N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper has released the 2007 statewide crime rates.

    While crime across North Carolina rose by .1 percent in 2007, the violent crime rate dropped by .7 percent, Cooper said.

    “While no level of crime is acceptable, law enforcement’s work to keep the rate of violent crime down is much needed,” Cooper added. “But as any cop on the beat will tell you, when the economy goes down, crime goes up, and we’re troubled to see even a small increase in North Carolina’s overall crime rate.”

  • Shallotte crime report

    Shallotte police made the following arrests and investigated the following incidents last week.

    •Stolen diamond ring and setting at Upscale Boutique; suspect stole a ring with a half-carat diamond solitaire, valued at $1,000. Victim said ring was stolen within a half-hour of being placed in a display case.

    •Police arrested Jose Caceres, 25, of Wilson Avenue, Calabash, on charges of driving while impaired and no operator’s license. He was taken to Brunswick County Detention Center and given no bond.

  • HOLDEN BEACH POLICE REPORT

    Officers with the Holden Beach Police Department investigated the following incidents and made the following arrest. Information is taken directly from police activity reports.

    •Burglary, non-forced entry on Ocean Boulevard West; suspect took folding canvas chairs, a blow-up air mattress with pump, 10 cans of Sprite, a 32-quart cooler and 10 fishing rods.

    •Larceny on pier campground; suspect took an aluminum fishing rod and four other fishing rods.

    •Wesley Gray Trotter, 21, of Charlotte, for resist, obstruct and delay. According to the police report, the suspect ran when he was told to stop.

  • New county detention center completed, slated to open soon

    BOLIVIA—The newest extended stay facility in Brunswick County is ready to open.

    But it’s no hotel.

    The second phase of the Brunswick County Detention Center has been completed and is ready to house inmates.

    Capt. Kevin Holden, Brunswick County Detention Center chief jailer, said the 244-bed expansion project came in ahead of schedule and under budget.

    With additional beds, the two phases of the detention center can house 440 inmates, he said.

    •Geary Lynn Hill, 27, of 7400 Ocean Highway, Sunset Beach; charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, driving while impaired, exceeding posted speed, driving while license revoked and driving left of center.
