  • Police arrest one for driving while impaired, speeding

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH—Police officers arrested an Ocean Isle Beach man Saturday night for speeding while he was driving impaired.

    Larry Gene Freeman, 62, was charged with driving while impaired and speeding, according to the incident report.

  • Holden Beach Police investigate breaking and entering

    Holden Beach Police officers are investigating a breaking and entering reported Feb. 16.

    The victim reported a laser level, a Dell wireless module and $10 worth of change were stolen for the Halstead Street home.

  • Detention officers return to work, SBI report not yet released

    BOLIVIA—Two Brunswick County Detention Officers who have been on paid administrative leave following the sudden death of an inmate in jail last month have been allowed to return to work.

    Brunswick County Sheriff Ronald Hewett said Monday detention officers Karl Scoggins and Dustin Riddle “are off paid administrative leave effective immediately.”

    Scoggins and Riddle have been on paid administrative leave since Jan. 23, when Senaca Marrell Vaught, 32, of 371 Tree Acres Drive in Calabash, died suddenly while in custody at the Brunswick County Detention Center.

  • Man arrested on 20 drug charges, detained on $1 million bond

    LELAND—A Hampstead man has been arrested on 20 drug-related charges.

    According to arrest reports, Luis Miguel Gamboa-Gomez, 25, of 3212 Highway 210 W., has been charged with the following: 10 counts of trafficking in cocaine, two counts of manufacturing cocaine, two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine, four counts of sell/deliver cocaine and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

    Lt. Mickey Smith, head of the drug enforcement unit, said the SWAT team assisted drug agents in the arrest.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Property damage on Neese Circle in Leland; suspect cut victim’s window screen.

    •Larceny of a tag on Medical Campus Drive in Supply; suspect removed tag from victim’s vehicle.

    •Larceny on Green Swamp Road in Ash; suspect removed items from victim’s property.

  • Attacked inamte's mother wants jail policy changed

    BOLIVIA—A mother whose son was attacked by another inmate in jail says she should have been notified when it happened.

    Diane Cheers’ son, Ronald Dale Cheers, was at the Brunswick County Detention Center in January when an inmate attacked him, she said.

    Shallotte Police officers investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week.

    •Officers arrested Lamarr Andre McDow, 23, of Tryon Road, Shallotte, on charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

    Leland Police officers investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from patrol activity reports.

    •Pursuant to an investigation stop on Westover Drive, Timothy Donald Griffin, 19, of 106 Westover Drive, was cited and released for possession of stolen goods, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

  • County has first murder of the year

    LELAND—Three shots rang through the early-morning calm last Friday at a Leland home, one of them striking a 26-year-old man.

    Jerome Roberto Echlos died from a single gunshot wound to the chest at his Brandon Drive home around 3 a.m.

    Norris Tywynne Johnson, 26, also of 6786 Brandon Drive, has been charged with his murder, Brunswick County Sheriff Ronald Hewett said.

    According to Hewett, Johnson and his girlfriend drove to the Brandon Street home from her home in Clinton, where the two had been living. They arrived in Leland around 3 a.m.
