  • Two arrested for cocaine trafficking that led to K-9’s death

    ASH—Two suspects were arrested for cocaine trafficking in an incident that led to the death of a sheriff’s office K-9.

    Deputy Jared Zeller, handler for K-9 Viper, who died from exposure to cocaine found in a cornfield, said Viper died after being exposed to chemicals in the drug.

    Called out to assist the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the cocaine found by Viper weighed 1,162 grams, which carried a street value of more than $100,000.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Burglary and vandalism on Loretta Street in Supply; suspect broke out victim’s window and entered victim’s home.

    •Breaking and entering and larceny on Calbert Circle in Supply; suspect stole money from victim’s van.

    •Breaking and entering and larceny on Stanbury Road in Supply; suspect entered victim’s car and stole an iPod, money and CDs.

  • Brunswick County Vice-Narcotics Unit makes several arrests

    On July 1, agents with the Brunswick County Vice-Narcotics Unit, which includes officers from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Shallotte Police Department and Oak Island Police Department, arrested a mother and son on various drug charges

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. April Stanley said agents investigated complaints of drug activity at a Shell Point residence.

    Agents searched the home at 1628 Chadwick Landing Road in Shallotte, where they recovered marijuana and drug paraphernalia during an ongoing party.

  • Items stolen from unlocked cars in Sunset Beach

    SUNSET BEACH—Town police investigated three separate incidents of items stolen from unlocked cars on the Sunset Beach island.

    Two breaking-and-entering and larceny incidents, both reported July 11, involved vehicles parked on 35th Street and Second Street.

    In the 35th Street incident, someone during the night went into an unlocked vehicle and removed a global positioning system (GPS) and MP3 player. In the Second Street report, someone removed a GPS, iPod, Canon camera, cell phone and iPod chargers and $900 in cash from a vehicle.

  • Man charged for assaulting dad in Sunset Beach

    SUNSET BEACH—A 35-year-old man is being held at Brunswick County Detention Center after being charged with assault on his dad.

    Scott Brandon Helms, 35, is being held under $2,500 bond after being charged with misdemeanor assault July 8 at a residence on Dogwood Drive.

    The arrest occurred after a man was held down and beaten in the face with a fist by his son, Sunset Beach Deputy Chief Steve Smith said.

  • Shallotte man arrested on drug charges

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit arrested a Shallotte man last week on various drug-related charges.

    Sheriff’s office spokesperson Sgt. April Stanley said on Friday, July 8, deputies initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Jermine Tyrese Frink on N.C. 130 near Newman Smith Road in Ash.

    When deputies searched the vehicle, Stanley said they found and seized 10 grams of marijuana as well as drug paraphernalia.

  • Southport man arrested for multiple business break-ins

    Deputies with the Brunswick County North End task force recently arrested a Southport man for multiple break-ins at businesses throughout Southport and Boiling Spring Lakes.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. April Stanley said between December 2010 and April 2011, eight area businesses reported being broken into on N.C. 87 and Long Beach Road.

    Stanley said detectives followed up on multiple leads, which led to the suspect, James Rudolph Craig.

    •Burglary and larceny of a firearm on Jackson Street in Supply; suspect stole a firearm from victim’s residence.

    •Larceny on Blue Drive in Supply; suspect stole trailer hitch from victim’s vehicle.

    •Larceny on Harbor Drive in Holden Beach; suspect stole victim’s cell phone.

  • Two arrested for Holden Beach break-ins

    VARNAMTOWN—Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and special operations unit worked together this week to take two local suspects into custody in Varnamtown.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. April Stanley said multiple incidents were reported between June and July about motor vehicle break-ins, copper thefts and golf cart battery thefts in the Holden Beach area.

    These incidents generated numerous community complaints and tips that led detectives to the two suspects, Benjamin Carlyle and Justin Varnum.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office drug report

    On June 27, agents with the Brunswick County Vice Narcotics Unit investigated alleged drug activity in the Shell Point area.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. April Stanley said vice narcotics agents searched a home at 1315 Elmers Drive SW in Shallotte, where they seized more than 2 pounds of marijuana, digital scales, plastic bags, marijuana smoking devices and a .40-caliber handgun.
