  • No charges in inmate death at Brunswick County Detention Center

    BOLIVIA—No charges have been filed in connection with a December 2011 death of an inmate at the Brunswick County Detention Center.

    District attorney Jon David announced Monday, Feb. 20, he found no evidence criminal charges were warranted in the death of 21-year old Steven Allen Myers of Cary.

    Sheriff’s office officials said Myers “died alone in his cell of an apparent suicide” on Dec. 23, 2011, while in custody at the Brunswick County Detention Center.

  • Update: Man killed in fatal wreck is from Sunset Beach

    N.C. State Highway Patrol officials did not have all the available information about a fatal wreck in Supply when the Beacon went to press last week.

    Last Monday, Feb. 6, a Sunset Beach man was killed in a fatal wreck on U.S. 17 in Supply in front of Brunswick Electric Membership Corp.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's Office crime report

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Larceny on Oak Street in Ash; suspect stole a 300-gallon barrel from victim’s property.

    •Larceny on Makatoka Road in Supply; suspect stole $157 in cash from victim.

    •Burglary, larceny and vandalism on Meadowlark Lane in Shallotte; suspect entered victim’s home through the back door and stole a 10-speed bike, valued at $200.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office ACE roundup

    The ACE Team is a support unit whose primary functions are traffic enforcement and assisting in the apprehension of drug traffickers in the county.

    From Feb. 6-12, ACE deputies issued 132 total traffic violations and other charges Deputies charged six suspects with driving while impaired (DWI). Deputies patrolled Longwood, Supply, Leland, Southport, Winnabow, Calabash and Ash.

    The following suspects were charged:

    •Gwendolyn Chavis, 46, of 820 Fairway Drive, Longs, S.C., was charged with DWI and open container.

  • Ocean Isle Beach Crime Report

    Officers with the Ocean Isle Beach Police Department investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from police incident and arrest reports.

    •Missing person on Scotland Street; victim was traveling from Bladenboro to Ocean Isle Beach. The subject was located.

    •Breaking and entering and larceny on East Fourth Street; suspect entered the victim’s storage area and took a bicycle and two surfboards.

  • Shallotte Crime Report

    The Shallotte Police Department investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from police incident and arrest reports.

    •Assault by dragging; the suspect drug the victim with his vehicle in the Walmart parking lot.

    •Julian Ivory Johnson, 19, of 2094 Empire Road SW, Supply, was charged with two counts of failure to appear for no operator’s license and failure to appear for drug paraphernalia. Johnson was a passenger in a vehicle during a traffic stop.

  • Drug agents seize 400K in crystal meth, largest meth bust in county history

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Vice Narcotics Unit and the Drug Enforcement agency teamed up to seize more than $400,000 worth of ice crystal methamphetamine.

    According to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Agent Steve Lanier, the 2-kilogram seizure of crystal methamphetamine is the single-largest methamphetamine bust in the county’s history.

    “It’s something we hardly ever see. It’s very rare,” Lanier said.

  • Sheriff’s Office drug report

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit arrested the following suspects last week:

    •Phillip John Autwell Jr., 22, of 3301 Mount Misery Road, Leland, was charged with trafficking in opium or heroin and possession with intent to sell and deliver a schedule II controlled substance. He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center, where he was placed under a $100,000 secured bond.
