  • Sheriff's deputies search for missing Leland teen

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for a missing Leland teenager.

    Gregory Allen Eason, 16, was last seen at 5 p.m. Monday, May 9, leaving his home at 7320 Pinecliff Drive in Leland, on foot.

    Eason was last seen wearing blue shorts and a white shirt and had a red backpack with him.

    He is 5-feet-10-inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. He has blue eyes and brown hair.

    He is possible headed to McDonough, Ga., to see his girlfriend, possible on a Greyhound bus.

  • West Brunswick JV softball team finishes as conference champion

     The West Brunswick High School junior varsity softball team beat West Bladen 11-1 in six innings Monday and finished the season 12-2 (11-1 in the conference).

    West clinched the conference title by winning 6-3 May 5 at East Bladen.

    Last year, West was the unbeaten conference champion last year. Over two seasons, the West JV is 28-2.

    “They can all play, and you can tell it when game time comes,” Trojan coach Donald Davis said.

  • Family grieves tragic loss

    SUPPLY—Sometimes laughing through the tears is the only way to deal with loss.

    One Supply family is trying to do just that.

    On Wednesday, May 4, around 10:45 a.m., Heidi Joann Robinson, 34,  fell to her death from a 14th floor balcony at the Sea Watch Resort in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Heidi Robinson was staying in a room on the 17th floor with several other people. Details surrounding the accident are under investigation.

  • Taco Bell opening delayed until Tuesday

    The Taco Bell in Shallotte was scheduled to open Monday at 5 p.m. As customers arrived on Monday evening, they were greeted by the store's owner and district managers in the parking lot. Customers were told the store would not open until around noon on Tuesday.

    The delay was caused by a delay in the arrival of necessary equipment. Owners apologized for the inconvenience and said everyone seemed understanding.

    Traffic control arrangements are in place for Tuesday's opening.

  • BCC begins championship tourney Friday

     The Brunswick Community College baseball team plays College of The Albemarle at 7 p.m. Friday in a first-round game of the Carolinas-Virginia Conference Baseball Tournament.

    O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City is the site of the double-elimination tourney.

    The winner of the eight-team tourney qualifies for the NJCAA Division II World Series. BCC, the regular-season conference champion in just the fourth year of its program, has never qualified for the World Series.

  • West’s Bell, Padgett win in state track and field qualifier

     West Brunswick High School senior Kayla Padgett won the discus throw in the NCHSAA Class 3A Regional Saturday at Nash Central High School.

    Padgett threw the discus 129 feet, 1 inch. The meet was a qualifier for the state meet Friday at N.C. A&T University. The top four in each event advanced to the state meet. Padgett finished second in the discus throw last year.

    Padgett finished second in the shot put with a distance of 38-5, a personal record. The winner was Whitney Williams of South Johnston (39-3).

  • Mother of murder suspect arrested for attempting to smuggle weapon to son in jail

    BOLIVIA—A Supply woman has joined her son in jail after attempting to bring him a weapon while in custody.

    According to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson April Stanley, Delphia Mae Marlow Bryant, 76, of 1820 Stone Chimney Road, was arrested for attempting to smuggle a weapon to her son, murder suspect Craig Bryant, in the Brunswick County Detention Center.

  • Sheriff’s deputy injured in wreck; Driver charged with DWI

    A Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputy was injured in a wreck when an impaired driver ran into his vehicle.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Sgt. April Stanley said deputy Jeremy Borowski “placed himself in harm’s way” to protect other drivers on the road from the impaired driver, who was later arrested. 

    Stanley said around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, the county’s 911 center received several calls about a reckless driver traveling east in the westbound lane on U.S. 74-76 in Leland.

  • West Brunswick shuts out South Columbus; Zio scores 27th

     Julianna Zio scored three goals and had three straight assists as West Brunswick beat South Columbus 8-0 May 4 in West’s final home game of the regular season.

    Zio, a junior, has scored a team-record 27 goals this season.

    Zio scored West’s first goal about seven minutes into the game. She slotted the low shot through the Stallion defenders for the 1-0 lead.
