    Harper brings home championship honors from Brierwood

    Dave Harper had a 36-hole total of 128 to claim the overall championship and Flight 2 honors in the Brierwood men’s Senior and Super Senior stroke play tournament March 6 and 8.

    Marty Waldron in Flight 1 with a 139 and Jim Bryant in Flight 2 with a 140 were the Senior Flight winners.

    Taking Flight 1 in the Super Senior was Reggie Fitz-Gerald at 138.

    Finishing behind Waldron in Senior Flight 1 were Jim Davis at 146, Wayne McGlothlin at 148 and John Beavers at 157.

  • FINALLY! West Brunswick girls get elusive victory

    SHALLOTTE—Just four games into her first year as the West Brunswick girls’ soccer coach, Laura Libero saw a seven-year jinx come to an end Monday as the Lady Trojans finally won a Mideastern 3A/4A Conference game.

    It took a heady play by seniors Mary Dorn and Jordan “Jo Jo” Clear to get the second and winning goal in the 61st minute of the league clash with Ashley at M.H.Rourk Stadium. The final score: West Brunswick 2, Ashley 1.

  • Brunswick County Wrestler of the Year

    Sammy Roundtree wrapped up his high school wrestling career with a fifth place finish in the 130-pound class at the Class 1A/2A state championships last month in Winston-Salem.

    In doing so, he also wrapped up Brunswick County’s Wrestler of the Year honors.

    Roundtree, who finished his senior season with a 46-3 record, is the cornerstone of a very talented All-Brunswick County team.

    In all, 10 of the 12 wrestlers from Brunswick County who qualified for the state tournaments are members of the elite squad.

  • Lady Trojans defeat South Brunswick in 13 innings

    Last year, South Brunswick and West Brunswick’s softball teams played a 12-inning marathon.

    Last Tuesday they went one better, with the Lady Trojans escaping Boiling Spring Lakes with a 4-1 victory in 13 innings.

    The Lady Cougars sent the game into extra innings in the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Shatiqua Smith. Smith’s hit followed base hits by Ashley Edge and Katlin Clemmons.

  • West track team shows promise in opener

    West Brunswick’s track and field team showed some promise in last Thursday’s season-opening quadrangular meet at Laney High School in Wilmington.

    “It was a good first meet for us,” said coach Yogi Hickman. “So many of our kids were on the track for the first time that we really didn’t know what to expect. I thought they competed well.”

    White Oak took first place in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions.

  • Trojans top South Cougars in nine innings

    Pat Kamfolt’s two-out RBI single in the ninth inning lifted West Brunswick to a 4-3 win against county rival South Brunswick in a high school baseball game last Tuesday at Boiling Spring Lakes.

    West Brunswick got a strong performance from senior pitchers Ethan Cox and Aaron Evans, who combined on a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts.

    The left-handed Cox got the start and allowed two hits and one earned run, struck out nine and walked three in 5 2/3 innings. The right-handed Evans pitched 3 1/3 no-hit innings in relief for the win. He struck out seven.

  • West falls to White Oak in 3A/4A conference match

    White Oak, the top team in the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association 3A poll, defeated West Brunswick 4-0 in a Mideastern 3A/4A Conference match last Wednesday in Jacksonville.

    Stephanie Rose, Amanda Fenton, Shelby Carroll and Catlin McLaughlin scored one goal apiece for the Lady Vikings. Rose also had two assists for the two-time defending state 3A champions.

    West Brunswick 2 Dixon 2

    Jordan Clear scored the tying goal in the 65th minute as the West Brunswick Lady Trojans came away with a 2-2 non-conference tie against visiting Dixon last Thursday at Shallotte.

  • North Brunswick baseball team gets win against South Columbus

    STAFF REPORT

    The North Brunswick baseball team got off to a rousing start in Waccamaw 1A/2A Conference play, beating South Columbus 9-5 last Thursday at Leland.

    The win was the second in a row for the Scorpions, who had their game with West Brunswick rained out last Friday. The county schools will play the makeup game at North Brunswick March 26.

  • South Brunswick girls' soccer knocks down conference rival Trask

    STAFF REPORT

    The South Brunswick girls soccer teamed served notice to its Waccamaw 1A/2A Conference rivals, scoring 11 goals in a league-opening victory against Trask at Boiling Spring Lakes Monday.

    The 11-goal outburst followed a 13-0 non-conference win at West Bladen last Wednesday.

    South Brunswick is 2-1-1 and 1-0 in the Waccamaw. They had matches at Whiteville Wednesday and at Class 3A No. 1 White Oak on Friday before returning home to play East Bladen next Monday.

  • Lady Trojans sweep softball doubleheader

    West Brunswick’s Lady Trojans swept a softball doubleheader Monday against South Columbus at Vinegar Hill to stretch their winning streak to four games.

    The Lady Trojans (5-1) won the opener 6-1 and took the nightcap 7-2.

    Amber Rampero went 2-for-2 with a home run; Carly White tripled and Heather Carter had a double.

    Carter was the winning pitcher.

    Rampero and Stacey Jackson each doubled in the second game with White picking up the victory. Rampero went 2-for-3.
