  • WBHS students earn ‘proficiency’ honors at international competition

     SHALLOTTE — After 21 West Brunswick High School DECA students placed in the state competition during a February competition in Greensboro, they earned a trip to Disney World for an international academic competition.

  • Fire destroys Ocean Isle Beach house

     OCEAN ISLE BEACH — A fire that started during Tropical Storm Ana destroyed one house and damaged two others on Ocean Isle Beach on Sunday, May 10.

    Firefighters responded to the fire at 456 S. Fourth St. before 3 p.m. Sunday, Fire Chief Robert Yoho said. Two Ocean Isle Beach police officers, Nathan Brown and Britt Buell, saw the fire and quickly reported it to the fire station.

    Firefighters were able to control the blaze within an hour to an hour-and-a-half of the call.By the time the fire was extinguished, the home was a total loss, Yoho said.

  • Sheriff’s office mourns K-9 officer Moncey

     During her last working assignment, Moncey traced every inch of the stage at the Azalea Festival in Wilmington, ensuring there were no explosives in the area undetected by the human eye. Explosives were Moncey’s specialty.

    But just a month after an action-packed, three-day work session as a K-9 officer working the Azalea Festival, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is mourning Moncey, a black German shepherd who died May 3 from a ruptured spleen, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Emily Flax said.

  • Winnabow man sought for questioning arrested in Maryland

     A Winnabow man sought for questioning in a late April break-in and larceny case has been arrested in Maryland.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office deputies asked for the public’s assistance locating 20-year-old Franklin Ray Lewis, 20, of Greenhill Road, who they wanted for questioning in an April 28 theft from a residence on his street. A safe containing cash, various titles and deeds, and old coins were taken, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Emily Flax said.

  • Woman dies in head-on collision on N.C. 211

     A 60-year-old Ohio woman died in a head-on collision May 4 in Southport.

    Deborah Dunkle, of Cleveland Heights, was driving north on N.C. 211 when she swerved at the West Trace intersection to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of her and struck a dump truck instead, N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper C.S. Thompson said.

    Dunkle was pronounced dead at the scene, Thompson said.

    The wreckage caused lengthy traffic delays on N.C. 211 that afternoon, forcing traffic to detour to Midway Road in Bolivia.

     For veterans or their spouses looking for a fresh start in the criminal justice system, a first-of-its-kind Veteran’s Amnesty Day provided that opportunity last week in New Hanover County.

  • BCC loses to PHCC, season ends

     

    The Brunswick Community College baseball season ended in a 9-5 loss May 12 to host Patrick Henry Community College in the NJCAA Division II Region 10 championship tournament in Martinsville, Va.

    BCC finished with 13 hits as Chase Gehringer and Dillon Stewart hit home runs, but PHCC also had 13 hits.

    PHCC scored three runs in the first inning against starter Patrick Corcoran. Gerhinger hit a two-run home run in the top of third, but PHCC also scored twice in the inning. A PHCC run in the fourth put it ahead 6-2.

     For the past several weeks in this column, I’ve been talking about a lesson developed by Alice Henneman from the Extension Service at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Alice works in Lancaster County, Neb. She tested many recipes for all meals of the day, including snacks and desserts. She was going for good for you, as well as good and easy.

  • Balsamic vinegar brings out the fresh flavor of herbs and fruits

     Balsamic vinegar has a variety of uses. Have you ever tried drizzling a little on a baked potato instead of using butter or sour cream? How about over steamed vegetables or in place of soy sauce in stir-fried vegetables? Some use it as a substitute for salt with either meat or poultry.

    I think one of the best uses of balsamic vinegar is over fresh tomatoes and mozzarella, with just a little touch of basil. It just seems to bring out the flavor of the basil.
