The world has changed a whole lot since I graduated from college. Opportunities abound for women today that were inconceivable back then.
I was a journalism/sociology major but, alas, couldn’t find anyone who would pay me to write in New York City (where my then fianc, Gene, had secured a job).
Time was of the essence, so I took a job with the Department of Welfare at the Tremont Welfare Center near Yankee Stadium in the South Bronx. In retrospect, it was a great opportunity for a little wet-behind-the-ears farm girl, and I learned a whole lot in that first year.
