  • West Brunswick advances to second round of state baseball playoffs

    Since the beginning of last season, the West Brunswick High School varsity baseball team has leaned on the powerful right arm of senior Johnathon Carlyle.

    The first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A state playoffs was no different as Carlyle tossed a complete game to lead the Trojans to a 4-1 road victory over Western Alamance on Wednesday, May 10.

    After a 231-mile trek to Elon for its first-round contest, West raced out to an early lead behind timely hitting.

  • Piperettes play member-guest tourney

    The Piperettes of Sandpiper Bay played their annual member-guest tournament May 2. Thirty members and their guests were divided into three flights and played two-person best ball. The tournament chairwoman was Pat Hannigan.

    Gross, first flight: Bernice Morris and Mary Hedrick, +10. Second flight, Diane Rauch and Sandy Belcher, +14. Third flight: Carol Haack and Claire O’Brien, +24.

  • Lessons from the Wells Fargo

    The Wells Fargo Championship was contested last week at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington. I have been to and played many championship golf courses, including Augusta National, and Eagle Point ranks among the top three courses I have been to.

    The players were raving about the layout and the conditions all week. Phil Mickelson said, “it ranks in the top five courses” they will play all year. Coming from Mickelson, this holds a tremendous amount of value to me.

  • Scorpion teams win East Central Conference title meet

    LELAND — The North Brunswick girls’ and boys’ track and field teams won the East Central Conference track and field championships May 2 at Garry Bishop Stadium.

    North’s girls scored 176 points. Croatan was second (121.5) in the seven-team meet.

    North’s boys scored 224 points. Croatan was second (103) in the seven-team meet.

    In the girls’ meet, North won five individual events and used its depth to win the championship.

    Shakespeare was obviously fond of flowers. One of his favorite plant families was the mint family. I think it’s my favorite family, too.

  • Hester-Hughes engagement

     Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Angela Lynn Hester and Michael Dewayne Hughes, both of Shallotte. The bride-elect is the daughter of Thomas Judson of Bladenboro and the late Dianne Judson. The prospective groom is the son of Doris Hughes of Shallotte and the late Albert Hughes. A June 17 wedding is planned at Bladenboro Historical Building.
