  • BCC Early Childhood program receives donation for equipment

    The Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) at Brunswick Community College (BCC) was the recipient of a donation by Molly Dupre, in honor of her parents, the Hatfields. 

    The donation, given through the BCC Foundation, was designated for the purchase of outdoor equipment for the infant/toddler playground at the center. 

    Dupre, a former educator, addressed a group at the Dec. 10 dedication ceremony.

  • CIS needs volunteers

    Since August, Communities in Schools of Brunswick County (CIS) volunteers have logged more than 4,000 hours of one-on-one time with more than 1,000 students through the Adopt A School and Volunteer Program. 

    CIS works with Brunswick County Schools to enhance the quality of education by bringing the community and its resources directly to students.

  • Students make honor rolls, earn awards at VWES

    Virginia Williamson Elementary School has released its honor rolls and awards for the first nine-weeks grading period.

  • Religion briefs

    Gospel jubilee set for Jan. 14

    Trinity Baptist Church, 883 Holden Beach Road in Shallotte, will host a free Brunswick Gospel Jubilee at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14. Come out and enjoy some gospel music from near and far. Refreshments will be served following the singing. For directions call 754-4018.

  • The whole world awaits Mary’s yes; it’s also our Christmas gift to a wounded world awaiting the birth of newness

    Many years ago, an abbot named Bernard of Clairvaux offered a homily in praise of the Virgin Mary. His presentation focused on the importance, the crucial nature, of Mary’s response and he positioned it within a framework of a waiting world, a universe living in anticipation of her response and hoping it will be a positive one.

  • Food safety class begins Jan. 10

    Learn the right techniques for handling, preparing, serving and storing foods safely during the ServSafe Food Safety for Restaurant Managers class offered in four sessions on Jan. 10, 24, 31 and Feb. 7 at the Training Center in the Cooperative Extension building (Building N) at the Government Center Complex in Bolivia. The four-hour classroom sessions begin each day at 12:30 p.m.

    Winter can be a drab, blah time in the garden but it certainly doesn’t have to be. In spring and summer, it is easy to find color for any spot in your landscape. There aren’t many plants that bloom this time of year. To add interest during the off-season, focus on interesting textures, colors and shapes. Evergreen trees and shrubs are a good choice to liven up a winter landscape. It is not hard to find a variety that will suit your needs.

    BLT to have ‘Doubt’ auditions

    Brunswick Little Theatre will conduct open auditions for John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, and 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at Playhouse 211, 4320-100 Southport-Supply Road (N.C. 211), across from BEMC between Supply and Southport.

    Show dates will be April 1-3 and 8-10.

    The cast consists of three females (one African American) and one male, ages 30-50’ish. Actors may request sides prior to auditions by contacting Pete McLintock at 540-7383.
