  • Governors' candidate forum sponsored by The Brunswick Beacon

    Interested in where the candidates for North Carolina governor stand on the issues?

    Republican and Democratic candidates for governor will square off April 17 at the “2008 North Carolina Governor’s Stand Up and Vote Candidates Forum,” at the Schwartz Center on the campus of Cape Fear Community College, Wilmington.

    The Brunswick Beacon, a media partner for the candidate forum, is seeking questions from readers about what issues affect Brunswick County and its residents.

  • Shallotte crime report

    Shallotte Police investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week:

    •Police arrested Alyssa Joy Skiff, 25, of Libby’s Lane, Conway, S.C., on April 4 and charged her with driving while impaired and open container. According to the report, police received a call about a vehicle “all over 17 north.” At Shallotte’s north end light, an officer stopped Skiff and noticed she had glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol. She was placed in the Brunswick County Detention Center.

  • Man arrested twice in Sunset Beach

    SUNSET BEACH—Police have arrested a local man on drug charges, his second arrest in a week.

    Matthew Shawn Arnette, 34, of 219 Live Oak Drive in Sunset Beach, was charged April 4 with possession of crack cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

    Arnette previously was arrested by the Sunset Beach Police Department on March 31 for parole violation.

  • Search warrant leads to one arrest

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit arrested one suspect after a search warrant last Friday.

    Lindsay Marie Bullock, 23, of 7099 Channel II St., Ocean Isle Beach, was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine, maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

    Bullock was released from the Brunswick County Detention Center on a $5,000 secured bond.

  • Escaped inmate captured, in custody at Brunswick County Detention Center

    An inmate who escaped from a Columbus County Jail in November has been captured.

    Jimmy Carroll Edwards, 27, of 215 W. Third St., Chadbourn, was arrested last Friday in Clemson, S.C.

    At press time Tuesday, Edwards in custody at the Brunswick County Detention Center in lieu of a $51,500 secured bond.

    According to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Detective Jayne Todd, Edwards is facing 38 charges in Brunswick County, including fraud, counterfeit checks, obtaining property by false pretences and probation violation.

  • Crime report

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Breaking and entering and larceny on Cambria Court in Sunset Beach; suspect entered an unlocked vehicle and stole a digital camera and credit cards.

    •Breaking and entering and larceny on Mount Misery Road in Leland; suspect entered victim’s home and stole a camera, a computer and a PlayStation.

    •Property damage at Town Creek Park in Leland; suspect damaged victim’s car.

  • Leland crime report

    Leland police officers investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from patrol activity reports.

    •Pursuant to a traffic stop on Village Road, Richard Edward Nance, 22, of 2798 Maco Road, was charged with driving while license revoked. Nance was arrested and taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center, and placed under a $3,700 bond for 12 outstanding warrants for failure to appear, and seven different driving while license revoked charges. Nance has court date of June 2.

  • SMS students to perform 'The Wiz'

    Shallotte Middle School students will ease on down the road Thursday and Friday during their spring musical production of “The Wiz.”

    “The Wiz,” book by William F. Brown, music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, is based on the story “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by Frank Baum.

    “The Wiz” originated with an all-black cast and gives a modern take on the story about a girl named Dorothy who was swept away in a tornado and taken to the land of Oz where she finds friends in a scarecrow, tin man and a lion.

  • Brunswick County Board of Education hosts forum for candidates

    The 10 candidates for the Brunswick County Board of Education discussed issues ranging from policies to performance during Thursday night’s candidate forum.

    Candidates from Districts 1, 2 and 4 gathered to introduce themselves, explain their reasons for seeking candidacy, and participate in a question and answer session.

    Running for District 1 are: Ray Gilbert, incumbent, Republican; Tracey Danka, Republican; Bud Thorsen, Republican; John Jones, Democrat; and Inger Marlowe, Democrat.

  • Brunswick County Homeschool Activity Group sets field day

    The Brunswick County Homeschool Activity Group invites all homeschooling families and their children in Brunswick and Columbus counties to a free Homeschool Field Day Friday, May 23, at Lockwood Folly Park on N.C. 211 in Supply.

    Everyone who participates will receive a participation ribbon and the top three participants for each age group in the first hour’s events will receive first-, second- and third-place ribbons.

    Registration is required no later than Friday, May 2, to ensure proper planning and ordering of ribbons.
