  • County planning board approves rezonings and subdivisions

    BOLIVIA—Members of the Brunswick County Planning Board considered the following map amendments on Monday night.

    •Recommended approving a request to rezone 78.8 acres on N.C. 211 to commercial low density from low-density residential.

    •Recommended approval of a request to rezone 7.8 acres on Blackwell Road and off U.S. 17 to commercial low density from medium-density residential.

    •Recommended the approval of a request to rezone .54 acres on Clemmons Road and N.C. 211 to commercial low density from low-density residential.

  • Airport gets $400,000 for runway extension

    SOUTHPORT-OAK ISLAND—The Brunswick County Airport has received $400,000 in earmarked federal funds.

    The funds are in the nation's new budget, U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre recently announced, to help with a final runway extension of 5,505 feet.

    Airport director Howie Franklin said the extension would allow executive jets to land at the airport, bringing in more revenue and more airport-based businesses catering to clients.

    Winding River Plantation’s new property owner’s clubhouse, a project that had already undergone three years of careful planning before ground was broken 10 months ago, will open soon according to a news release.

    Sloane Realty rated top franchise

    Coldwell Banker Sloane Realty was recently rated the No. 1 Real Estate Franchise, based on worldwide sales, for the eighth year in a row, according to a news release.

    The 2007 Franchise Times’ annual Top 200 issue also named Coldwell Banker 12th overall among 1,000 franchises spanning many different industries.

    Coldwell Banker was the only real estate firm in the Top 20.

  • Calabash UDO draft still drawing questions

    CALABASH—Residents and property owners continued to question the town’s Unified Development Ordinance draft update at a specially called meeting last Thursday.

    At issue are zoning changes, such as a residential (R-6) overlay and a new PUD district, while others expressed concern the changes will hinder use of their property.

    Calabash commissioner Forrest King questioned new requirements for setbacks and rear parking that would affect the business district.

  • Setback variance OKed in Carolina Shores

    CAROLINA SHORES—A rear yard setback variance was approved Monday by the Carolina Shores board of adjustments.

    Thomas Lewis received approval for a variance, regarding a sunroom that encroaches 7.5 feet into the 10-foot setback, town building inspector/code enforcement officer Jean Crowley said.

    At Monday’s hearing, Lewis said he was unaware of the encroachment after the sunroom was constructed in the footprint of a rear deck at his home at 3 Gate 11 in Carolina Shores.

  • Applicant questions Carolina Shores P&Z selection process

    CAROLINA SHORES—An applicant for the town’s planning and zoning board is questioning criteria used to appoint three new members to the board.

    Maxine Mangieri, one of seven people who applied for vacant board seats, said she was asked no questions about planning and zoning when she was recently interviewed by three board members, despite her previous experience in New Jersey.

  • New director on the job at Brunswick County Literacy Council

    Phillip Hedgepeth is the new executive director of the Brunswick County Literacy Council.

    He comes with 18 years of experience in the mental health field and says his experience working with adults and children with special needs will serve him well in the education of Brunswick County residents.

    The literacy council is headquartered on Ocean Highway near the Supply crossroads and provides free, confidential adult basic literacy tutoring as well as GED assistance and English as a second language.

  • Mount Pisgah has groundbreaking

    Pastor Richard Hicks officiated over a milestone event in Mount Pisgah Baptist Church’s history; the Jan. 6 groundbreaking ceremony for the new education and activities building.

    The church is at the corner of Mount Pisgah Road and Turnpike Road, one mile south of U.S. 17 in Supply.

    The first of four planned new facilities, the 25,000 square foot building will face Mount Pisgah Road. Future plans include a new sanctuary, school, and gymnasium.

  • Drug report

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit made the following arrests last week. The suspects and their charges, which are taken directly from arrest reports, are:
