  • Eating to lower cholesterol

    For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been sharing information about heart healthy eating and cooking. This week, I’ll continue, since I’m teaching a series of classes on that topic in October and I’ve done a lot of reading on the topic. One area that is a concern to many people, whether you have heart disease or just trying to eat a healthy diet, is cholesterol. This will be the focus in week No. 2 in our class series.

    Heather Nicole Lanier, 27, 602 Willow Drive, Winnabow, arrested for driving while impaired after officers found her and her vehicle wrecked on Grandiflora Drive.

    September 10

    Terry Williams Spicer, 49, 821 Fanning Street, Wilmington, arrested on an order for arrest for failure to appear in court on a driving while impaired charge from Brunswick County.

  • Belville proposes Riverwalk to Battleship connection

    Following the success of planning and funding the first phase of the Brunswick Riverwalk park, Belville officials are thinking regionally by trying to bridge their park to the USS North Carolina Battleship park.

    Commissioner Joe Breault spoke at the Eagles Island Coalition Sept. 3 meeting to propose Belville, the Eagles Island Coalition and the Battleship Park work together on a bike and pedestrian trail that would run along the Belville side of the Brunswick River to an unused road that runs parallel to U.S. 17/74/76.

  • Shallotte supporting alcohol abstinence program in schools

    Shallotte officials agreed to the town’s ABC Board request to approve spending $2,000 to support a program to stop underage drinking.

    The Sold Out School Alcohol Abstinence Program uses school assembly programs then follows up with social networking and family and community support to provide drug and alcohol education and life skills to eliminate underage drinking and drug use.

    Five assemblies are planned to present to middle school students in the fall and five high school assemblies will take place in the spring.

  • Ocean Isle Beach swears in new police chief

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH – Four generations of Ken Bellamy’s family and a packed room of visitors including Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram and District Attorney Jon David attended Bellamy’s swearing-in as the new Ocean Isle Beach Police Chief Tuesday.

    Bellamy, the former Assistant Chief, stepped up to the role after former Chief John Goodwin retired in August.

    “John was chief for 23 and a half years. He gave his notice in June and retired last month,” Town Administrator Daisy Ivey said.

    David Wesley Pridgen, 32, 374 Silent Brook Trail, Jacksonville, Fl., arrested on an order for arrest for failure to appear in court on a second degree trespassing charge out of New Hanover County.

    Breaking and entering and larceny of cell phones by someone busting into the front door of Murillo on Holden Beach Road and damaging a display case to steal cell phones.

    Teresa Power Mote, 52, 707 Sunset Oaks Lane, Sunset Beach, arrested on charges of drunk and disruptive, assault on a government officials and resisting arrest.
