  • Marijuana arrestee due in court this week

    SUNSET BEACH—A Myrtle Beach, S.C., man charged with selling marijuana was due in court Tuesday to face traffic charges.

    Howard Jason Harris, 35, was scheduled for a court appearance Tuesday on a speeding violation, Sunset Beach Police Chief Lisa Massey said during Monday’s monthly town council meeting.

    Additional charges against Harris of intent to sell and deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance will involve grand jury indictments, followed by an appearance in Superior Court, Massey said.

  • UDO update launches in Sunset Beach

    SUNSET BEACH—Zoning, flooding, subdivision regulations and stormwater management are among issues the town’s newly appointed Unified Development Ordinance Committee will begin addressing.

    The committee’s ongoing sessions launched last Thursday with consultant Landin Holland of Holland Consulting Planners of Wilmington, who outlined ordinances they’ll be scrutinizing and updating.

  • Streetscape, parking recommendations presented in Sunset Beach

    SUNSET BEACH—Town council is pondering a future streetscape design and future parking recommendations for the island.

    Town-appointed committees presented each at Monday night’s monthly meeting. Council took no action on either presentation.

    Streetscape committee member Tim Cate, a landscape architect who lives on the Sunset Beach island, unveiled drawings illustrating that committee’s proposals for beautifying Sunset Boulevard.

    Seaside Animal Care has once again offered its facility in Calabash for Red Toe Day on Valentines Day, Feb. 14, from 2-4 p.m.

    Your favorite feline or canine will receive a nail trim and one nail painted red to show their support of the homeless animals in our community.

    Donations for nail services will be donated to Paws-Ability, a nonprofit organization that raises money and provides financial assistance for animal causes in Brunswick County.

  • Parking rules raising Sunset Beach sand

    Attention non-Sunset Beach residents, non-island renters and other no-counts.

    Do you have (plenty of) parking money tucked in your beach bucket before you venture across the new $44 million Mannon C. Gore high-rise bridge this summer?

    You just might need it, assuming you can even find an available, legal parking space on the island.

    Depending on what Sunset Beach Town Council ultimately decides, recommended rules presented Monday night by a town-appointed parking committee don’t mince words.

  • Countywide recycling presented in Carolina Shores

    CAROLINA SHORES—The town will have to decide whether it will be a participant in countywide recycling.

    Greg Brinkley, general manager with Waste Industries, and assistant county manager Steve Stone were on hand to provide information and answer questions at a town commissioners’ workshop Monday.

    Brinkley said if the town elects to continue with a 40-yard container with residents bringing items to its recycling center, that can be continued at the company’s expense.

    CAROLINA SHORES—Property management representatives for Beacon Townes condominiums say they are trying to resolve issues that have arisen over the past couple of years in the Carolina Shores community.

    A roomful and newly organized alliance of homeowners from the community met with property management representatives Feb. 1 in a conference room in Little River, S.C.

  • Calabash P&Z member remembered

    CALABASH—It was a somber session as the town planning and zoning board convened Monday night to remember a member who died last week.

    Longtime board member Alton Watts, 76, passed away suddenly after suffering a heart attack Jan. 31, interim administrator/town clerk Kelley Southward said.

    She said he had served on the board a long time.

  • Commissioner gets retraction, apology for erroneous attribution

    CALABASH—Town commissioner Forrest King requested and got a retraction from fellow commissioner John Melahn on Tuesday night.

    King said Melahn committed an ethics violation and injured his reputation when he erroneously attributed to King a statement about the “terrible people from Carolina Shores who took away animated signs” at the Calabash board’s monthly meeting Jan. 11.
