  • Shallotte Crime

    The Shallotte Police Department investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from police incident and arrest reports.

    •Billy Joe Lawson, 36, of 6921 Pearl St., Ocean Isle Beach, was arrested for felony possession of cocaine and driving while license revoked. The suspect was pulled over for equipment violation and consented to a search of his vehicle. Officers found a white rock substance in the driver’s side floorboard. Lawson was held at the Brunswick County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond.

  • SBI launches probe into Gore, former assistant district attorney

    Agents with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation have launched an investigation into former District Attorney Rex Gore.

    Noelle Talley, public information officer for the North Carolina Department of Justice, confirmed the SBI is investigating Gore, who served as district attorney for Brunswick, Columbus and Bladen counties for nearly 20 years before being defeated in the May 2010 primary election.

  • Commissioners approve launching censure proceedings

    BOLIVIA—Brunswick County Commissioners on Monday voted four to one to begin censure proceedings on commissioner Charles Warren for a code of ethics violation.

    The alleged ethics infraction centers on Warren’s refusal to step down as chairman of the Brunswick County Board of Social Services, a violation of the county’s code of ethics, according to county attorney Huey Marshall.

  • Former Wilmington assistant named Carolina Shores administrator

    Mike Hargett, a former assistant city administrator in Wilmington, has been named Carolina Shores’ new town administrator, according to a press release issued Monday.

    Hargett replaces former administrator Linda Herncane, who retired Feb. 1. His duties begin Feb. 14.

  • VIDEO County wrestling championships, Matt Craven

     At 119 pounds in the county wrestling championships, South Brunswick senior Matt Craven (35-4) won a first-round match by fall over North’s Steve Ercole. Craven won the championship by beating West senior Dillon Aubrey 5-0. Aubrey won a first-round match by fall over North’s Steve Ercole.

    Craven was one of five wrestlers to successfully defend their titles. He also was one of nine South wrestlers to win a title. See story on this website.

     South Brunswick senior Stephen Ikalowych, left, is the county wrestling champion at 171 pounds. Ikalowych (37-2) also was named one of the wrestlers of the year. 

  • VIDEO INCLUDED County wrestling championships

     South Brunswick wrestlers won nine titles and West Brunswick wrestlers won four titles in the annual county wrestling championships Saturday at West.

    West junior Ronnie Dellinger and South senior Stephen Ikalowych were named wrestlers of the year.

    At 103 pounds, Dellinger (31-1) defended his championship by fall in 45 seconds over South junior Steven Von Voight.

    Dellinger’s only loss this season was to a wrestler ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, West wrestling coach Jimmy Caraway said.

  • North’s girls defeat South Brunswick

     LELAND—Tyera Fisher scored 26 points as North Brunswick beat South Brunswick 63-41 in a conference basketball game Friday.

    Barbara Graham scored 13 points, Daja White 11 and Jolanda White 8 for North, 9-1 in the conference, 14-4 overall.

    The victory completed a sweep of the four regular-season games against West Brunswick and South Brunswick.

    For South, winless in the conference, 3-15 overall, Kacy O’Connor scored 16 points.

    North’s defense led the Scorpions to a first-quarter lead of 19-9.

  • South’s boys beat North Brunswick

     LELAND—South Brunswick outscored North Brunswick 10-0 at the start of the third quarter and went on to beat the Scorpions 55-40 in a conference boys’ basketball game Friday at North.

    The victory completed a regular-season sweep of four games against West Brunswick and North Brunswick.

    For the Cougars (6-4, 10-8), Edward Reid scored 18 points, Montez Loman 15 and Terrell Stanley 11.

    For the Scorpions (3-7, 8-10), Jeremy Young scored 9 points.

  • Countywide talent show Saturday

    "A Talent Spotlight," the countywide talent show featuring acts from four area high schools, will take the stage this weekend.

    The noncompetitive talent showcase will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at Odell Williamson Auditorium on the Brunswick Community College Campus. Winning acts from recent talent shows at West Brunswick, South Brunswick, North Brunswick and Early College high schools will perform.

    Admission is $5 at the door. Children 6 and younger will be admitted free.
