    Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Whitney N. Williams and Josh E. Lopez, both of Greensboro. The bride-elect is the daughter of G. Eric and Regina Williams of Sunset Beach. She is a pharmacist in High Point. The prospective groom is the son of Rudy and Naara Lopez of Greensboro. He will graduate in May from Elon School of Law. A March 17 wedding is planned at Seaside Methodist Church.

    Mandy and Courtney Nealeans of Clemmons are the proud parents of a son, Carson Vann Nealeans, born at 11:04 p.m. Feb. 14, Thanksgiving Day, at Forsyth Hospital in Winston-Salem.
    Maternal grandparents are Robert and Wendy Bonas of Phoenix, Md.
    Paternal grandparents are Alan and Karen Nealeans of Lewisville, and Patty and Terry Garrison of Holden Beach. Great-grandfather is Vann Nealeans of High Point. Great-great-grandmother is Pearl Brockwell of Chapel Hill.

  • Ocean Ridge plays Stableford tourney

    The Ocean Ridge Men’s Golf League played its annual four-man team Stableford Tournament Feb. 13 and Feb. 15 on Panther’s Run and Lion’s Paw.
    The scoring was based on -1 point for a net double bogey or higher, 0 points for a net bogey, 1 point for a net par, 3 points for net birdie, 5 points for a net eagle and 8 points for a net double eagle.

  • Golf Ball is Feb. 25

    The First Tee of Brunswick County’s second annual The Golf Ball is quickly approaching. Have you purchased your tickets?
    This event will be Feb. 25 at 101 Stone Chimney, Supply, and promises to be an evening filled with food, fellowship and dancing to Fat Jack Band.
    Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres begin at 5 p.m. with dinner following at 6 p.m. There will be a 50/50 raffle, wine/liquor basket raffle and silent auction. Tickets are $75 per person.

    Maritime Museum tourney March 21
    The third annual N.C. Maritime Museum at Southport Golf Classic, sponsored by the museum’s Friends organization, will take place at 11 a.m. March 21 at The Members Club at St. James Plantation.
    The entry fee of $85 per golfer covers golf, cart fee, happy hour and dinner, plus a hole-in-one challenge. All proceeds go toward the museum’s acquisition of a submarine periscope and continued renovation of the museum facility. Golfers may sign up at friendsncmmsouthport.org.

  • Black History Month and me

    I grew up on a farm in rural Maryland and went to segregated schools. I never once spoke to a person of color until I went to college at Syracuse University.
    There were a few black people in North East, Md. I knew they were there, but we never talked with them, hardly noticed them. All the black kids were bused to a school near Elkton.
