  • OIB resident earns one of state’s highest honors at 90th birthday party

     OCEAN ISLE BEACH — For one Brunswick County resident, Saturday night was a celebration, awards ceremony and a chance for family and friends to celebrate the first 90 years of their loved one’s decorated life.

    Bob Bradicich, a resident of Ocean Ridge Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach, celebrated his 90th birthday with more than 100 family members and friends inside the Plantation Club at Ocean Ridge on Saturday night, Jan. 17.

  • Shallotte man accused of sexually assaulting child

    A Shallotte man accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old last year was arrested Wednesday, Jan. 21.

    Murton Harold Hyde, 56, of Turkey Street, is charged with six counts of first-degree statutory sexual offense, three counts of crimes against nature and three counts of indecent liberties with a child, according to a Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office news release.

    The incidents occurred between July and December 2014, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Emily Flax said. She did not say if the child was a girl or boy.

  • Leland woman accused of selling marijuana at restaurant

    Brunswick County Sheriff's Office Drug Enforcement Unit agents arrested a Leland woman accused of selling marijuana at a restaurant after a brief investigation prompted by tips from the community.

    Twenty-year-old Jordan LeAnn Howard, of Lanvale Road, faces two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver marijuana, selling marijuana and possession of marijuana paraphernalia possession of drug paraphernalia, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Emily Flax said.

  • Supply couple faces charges after traffic stop

    A Supply couple faces several drug charges after their arrest during a traffic stop.

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit arrested James Harold Jackson, 63, and Jeinene Lynn Jackson, 49, of Ocean Sound Circle on Tuesday, Jan. 20, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

  • Oak Island police seek two women suspected of fraud

    Oak Island police are asking for the public’s help to identify and find two women suspected of fraud.

    The women “used several stolen or fraudulent credit cards” in late December at a Food Lion grocery store in Oak Island, according to a Thursday, Jan. 22, news release from Lt. Tony Burke. The women made purchases worth several hundred dollars.

    Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 278-5595 or the nearest law enforcement agency.

  • West Brunswick wins MEC championship wrestling tourney

       SHALLOTTE — Host West Brunswick won the Mideastern Conference championship wrestling tournament Saturday. West had 10 finalists and four champions.

    Jimmy Caraway, coach of the unbeaten Trojans — they finished the regular season 22-0 — was voted by his peers as conference coach of the year.

    “That shows that they think a lot of what we’re doing here. We’re pushing the kids, making them work hard.

  • Ruppart, Bowersox win swim titles in MEC championship meet

     

    West Brunswick junior Dustin Ruppart and South Brunswick sophomore Tyler Bowersox won events in the Mideastern Conference swimming championship meet Jan. 29 in Wilmington.

    Ruppart won two events.

    He won the 200 freestyle (1:57.94), finishing ahead of New Hanover senior Nolan Jewell by 1.44 seconds

    Ruppart won the 500 freestyle in 5:17.31. Jewell was second in 5:19.58 The two swam nearly even through nine laps. Ruppart took the lead in the final lap, which he swam in 30.61 and Jewell swam in 32.02.

  • Trojan wrestlers finish 6-0 in MEC; now 22-0 overall

     The West Brunswick wrestling team finished the Mideastern Conference regular season 6-0 by routing host New Hanover 75-4 Jan. 28.

    In a non-conference dual, West routed Pender 75-6 and remained unbeaten this season (22-0).
