  • Faircloth-Bullard

    Jessie Amber Nicole Faircloth and David Alton Bullard III of Supply were married May 2 on the east end of Holden Beach.

    The Rev. Gary Boling officiated.

    The bride is the daughter of Philip and Beverly Faircloth of Supply.

    She was given in marriage by her daughters, Layla and Hayley, and escorted by Layla.

    She wore a white, ballerina-length halter-style dress with a princess silhouette and a sheer, fingertip length veil with diamond gemstones.

    She carried a bouquet of hot pink roses wrapped in ribbon.

  • Farrand-Starling

    Jennifer Kristen Farrand and Victor Burke Starling were married Saturday, May 9, at Sunset Beach Community Church in Sunset Beach.

    The Rev. Richard Farrand, father of the bride, officiated.

    The bride is the daughter of Richard and Karen Farrand of Sunset Beach. She is a CPA and chief financial officer at Riverside Mattress Company in Fayetteville.

    The groom is the son of Billie Jean Starling Davis and the stepson of Donald Davis. He has been a police officer with the Fayetteville Police Department for more than 20 years.

  • BCC students selected for state academic award

    Brunswick Community College students Cindy Munzing-Hickman and Tiffany Booker have been selected for the North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Award.

    Munzing-Hickman will graduate in May 2009 with an associate’s degree in science and a transfer core diploma in science, as well as an associate’s degree in aquaculture technology.

  • SHALLOTTE CRIME REPORT

    Shallotte Police charged the following people and investigated the following incidents last week:

    •Solicitation of prostitution at Jumpin’ Java; someone reported a woman soliciting people in the parking lot.

    •Police charged Shawn John Goodspeed, 29, of 247 W. North, Carlisle, Pa., with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of Diazepam. He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center.

    •Police charged Eric Vincent Mills, 26, of 520 Highland Court, Carlisle Pa., with drunk and disruptive.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's Office ACE roundup

    The Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) Team is a support unit, whose primary functions are traffic enforcement and assisting in the apprehension of drug traffickers in the county.

    The ACE team conducts driving while impaired and driver’s license checkpoints, as well as street-level investigations on controlled substances. The ACE team works with the sheriff’s office K-9 Enforcement Team and Drug Enforcement Unit to apprehend narcotics suspects as well as saturating hot spots where criminal activity is reported.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's Office K-9 Roundup

    The K-9 enforcement team answers calls, conducts driver’s license checkpoints and assists with other agencies when K-9s are needed.

    From May 25-31, deputies with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Enforcement Team answered 21 calls and wrote 13 uniform citations, including driving while license revoked, no operator’s license, revoked registration, child restraint violations and drug charges.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's Office drug report

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit made the following arrests last week. The suspects and their charges, which are taken directly from arrest reports and citations, are:

    •Jason Joel Berry, 26, of 3280 Cypress Drive, Little River, S.C.; charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a schedule I controlled substance, possession of ½ ounce or less of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

  • Stiller to resign from state House

    Citing the need to be closer to his family and the demands of his job, State Rep. Bonner Stiller, R-Oak Island, announced Tuesday he is resigning from the seat in the N.C. House of Representatives he has held since 2002.

    Stiller will officially vacate his position in Raleigh on June 15, he said, and will be available to help his successor to make a “super-smooth transition” into office during state budget deliberations.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's Office crime report

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Breaking and entering and larceny on Etheridge Road in Longwood; suspect stole victim’s motorcycle.

    •Breaking and entering, larceny of an auto and property damage on Long Beach Road in Southport; suspect opened victim’s gate and stole a truck.

  • Board votes to keep Transition Academy open for next school year

    The Board of Education voted 4-1 Wednesday to keep the Transition Academy in operation for the 2009-2010 school year, with its funding source to be determined.

    The possibility of closing the program was first introduced in March, and the board has been debating the issue since. The Transition Academy, aimed to help at-risk eighth-graders, offers smaller class sizes, more hands-on activities and individualized attention.
