  • Sweltering summer heat has varying effects on plants

    Glen Frey of Eagles fame had a song on the original “Beverly Hills Cop” movie soundtrack called “The Heat Is On.” More than 30 years have passed since its 1984 release and we just recently lost Mr. Frey. Who would have known that Axel Foley, Eddie Murphy’s beat-up Chevy Nova-driving Detroit cop character, would become so iconic? And, a few thought Mr. Murphy had already reached the pinnacle of his movie career so early.

    What does any of that have to do with gardening? Absolutely nothing. But, the heat surely has been on lately.

  • Brunswick County Schools bestow 2016-17 recognitions

    Brunswick County Schools recently released their list of teachers of the year, instructional assistants of the year, rookies of the year and finalists for special district awards. Schools are listed alphabetically.

  • Missing dog reunited with family in Holden Beach

    On Saturday, July 1, Nick Bazzle, Kim Jenkins Bazzle and their dogs Macy and Marley arrived in Holden Beach to soak up some sun and sand and spend some time with Nick’s mother, Dolly Kennerly.

    On Monday, July 3, the family was forced to return to their Taylorsville home because of work obligations without Macy.

    Nick said he and his wife arrived at his mother’s house in the early morning hours July 1 and later put the dogs in Dolly’s fenced backyard.

  • Next Brunswick County Teen Court session scheduled for July 25

    The next session of Brunswick County Teen Court will be July 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brunswick County Courthouse.

    Brunswick County Teen Court is a partnership program between Communities In Schools and the Brunswick County District Attorney’s Office, made possible through financial support provided by the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and Brunswick County Schools.

  • State trooper involved in OIB wreck

    A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper was involved in a two-vehicle collision Monday night in Ocean Isle Beach.

    Trooper R.M. McDermott was driving north on N.C. 179 and turned on his emergency lights to stop a vehicle for an infraction in front of Robertos Ristorante, Sgt. P.M. Sanders said. Two vehicles were in the center lane attempting to turn left into the restaurant.

    The driver of the second vehicle, a Jeep, decided to turn without being able to see any vehicles traveling north and was hit in the right rear by McDermott’s 2014 Dodge Charger.

  • Shallotte man faces charge of indecent liberties with a child

    A Shallotte man is accused of taking indecent liberties with a child last year.

    Alfredo Brigade Quevedo, 48, of Old Shallotte Road was arrested July 17 on the felony charge.

    Warrants show the crime happened between June 1, 2016, and October 30, 2016, with a child younger than 16.

    Quevedo is in the Brunswick County Detention Facility on $25,000 bail.

  • Supply man accused of child sex crime charges

    A Supply man is accused of committing sex crimes against a minor.

    Jeff Allen Smith, 39, of Morgan Road was arrested Wednesday, July 12, and charged statutory rape with a child younger than or equal to 15, sexual activity by a substitute parent or custodian and 16 counts of indecent liberties with a child.

    Warrants show the crimes happened Nov. 1, 2016, and April 20.

    Smith remains in the Brunswick County Detention Facility on $1 million bail.

  • Marshals arrest man in Southport wanted in Davie County rape case

    U.S. Marshals arrested a man in Southport who was wanted in Davie County on a rape charge.

    U.S. Marshals Task Force-Wilmington Division agents apprehended 32-year-old Kristopher Kraig Jacobson at Abbington Oaks Apartments on Abbington Oaks Way about 6:30 p.m. July 11, Deputy U.S. Marshal Russ Fields said.

    Jacobson was wanted in Davie County on a second-degree rape charge and on state parole violations. Fields said six warrants were issued June 29.

    Upon arriving in the United States, the Nowlin brothers fanned out throughout the United States in places like North Carolina, Virginia and as far away as Texas to make a name for themselves.
