    LELAND — Brunswick County became a piece of the battleground for the presidential election Wednesday afternoon with a visit from Republican vice presidential nominee, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, stopping by Manufacturing Methods in Leland.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's Office searching for missing Winnabow teen

    Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office are asking for assistance in locating a missing teen. 

    Colby Ayers Abreu, 14, of Winnabow, is described as a white male who is 5 feet 10 inches tall with black shoulder-length hair and a medium build.

    Abreu was last seen at his home on River Road wearing a white shirt.

  • Leland woman charged after hitting child with her car

    Leland Police officer arrested a Leland woman accused of hitting a young girl with her car the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 26. The girl was transferred to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and is in stable condition as of 10 p.m. Friday, Lt. Jeremy Humphries said.

    Christina Gordon Beatty, 42, was charged Friday and charged with felonious serious injury by vehicle, driving while impaired, failure to reduce speed, no insurance, revoked tag and expired inspection.

  • Coast Guard suspends search for missing diver off Oak Island

    The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a missing diver off of Oak Island.

    According to an official Coast Guard press release, a 48-year-old diver with Pleasure Craft Atlantis reported mechanical failure with his diving equipment and did not resurface at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25.

  • Crash on Makatoka Road leaves one injured

    A collision involving a pickup truck and a log truck sent one man to an area hospital Friday, Aug. 26.

    North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper T. Chavis said it happened at 6 a.m. when 67-year-old William Jordan of Chadbourn was turning his log truck off a dirt road onto Makatoka Road, unaware that 29-year-old Michael Simmons of Ash was already driving his black 2011 GMC Canyon on Makatoka Road heading towards the log truck.

  • BSL police arrest Burlington woman after Leland hit-and-run

    Boiling Spring Lakes police officers arrested a Burlington woman accused of a hit and run and eluding police before hitting an officer’s vehicle. Two others were in her vehicle at the time, including a minor.

    No injuries were reported.

    Jennifer Lee Smith, 44, was arrested Thursday, Aug. 25 and charged with felony fleeing to elude, assault with a deadly weapon on law enforcement, child abuse, driving while impaired, driving with a provoked license and open container violation.

  • District Attorney's Office: No criminal charges in January accidental death case

    The District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday, Aug. 25 that they will not be pressing charges in an accidental death case in Leland earlier this year.

  • New Lincoln Elementary teacher prepares for back-to-school

    LELAND — It’s about to be Elise Cabrisses’ second first day of school.

    Cabrisses, 24, of Wilmington, will begin her first day of teaching language arts and social studies to fifth-graders at Lincoln Elementary School starting Monday, Aug. 29. She said a year of teaching fifth-graders at Dogwood Elementary in Reston, Va., the previous school year ensures she has a pretty good idea of what she’s in for.

    A crash involving a motorcycle sent one man to an area hospital Thursday, Aug. 25 following a chase with law enforcement.

  • Tourism Development Authorities promote growth in Brunswick County

    August isn’t the peak month for tourism in Brunswick County, but it is proving to be a good month for local tourism development authorities.

    The Brunswick County Tourism Development Authority announced Aug. 18 visitor spending increased in the county for the sixth consecutive year to a high of more than $508 million.

    The Leland TDA is doing its part to keep the increases coming, announcing a new promotion kickoff to draw visitors here and get them to stick around.
