    The Ocean Ridge couples tournament played Sunday at Panther’s Run was a modified Stableford format.

    First at -92 was the team of Gordon and Kathy Wicke and Bob and Mary Kish. Second at -80 was the team of Bob Larkin II, Doris McLaughin and Pete and Becky Williams. Tying for third at -76 were the teams of Ed and Di Gruver and Roger and Linda Buck, and Lynn and Beverly Furman and Larry and Diane Wright. Tying for fifth at -75 were the teams of Allen and Judy Keegan and Brian and Toni Roe, and Chappy and Peggy Jones and Bob and Grace Bradicich.

  • South prevails over Trojans

    Celebrating on the sidelines after South Brunswick’s 25-15 victory over West Brunswick, coach Gordon Walters hugged senior Greg Gilbert, lifted him off the ground and shouted, “I love you.”

    Walters’ feelings were shared by all Cougar fans, as Gilbert intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter to clinch the Cougars’ thrilling victory Friday night.

  • North's Nelson wins cross-country meet; South wins team title

    BOILING SPRING LAKES—North Brunswick’s Rashaad Nelson won the 3.1-mile conference cross-country race Sept. 9 at South Brunswick.

    South Brunswick’s boys won the team competition, finishing with 31 points. North finished with 39 points. Trask and Pender forfeited.

    Nelson finished in 19 minutes, 27 seconds.

    Pender’s Hector Sanchez was second (19:41), North’s Tony Wright third (20:24) and South Brunswick’s Charlie Martin fourth (20:30).

  • Cougars beat Scorpions in three games

    LELAND—Volleyball is a game of many shifts in momentum, and South Brunswick handled that better than North Brunswick in a three-game conference victory Sept. 10. The Cougars beat the Scorpions 25-21, 25-19, 25-13.

    The second game was the pivotal one, as North rallied from a 16-11 deficit to take a 17-16 lead. But the Cougars held North to two points the rest of game in the 25-19 victory and then cruised to victory in the third game after taking a 10-2 lead.

  • South tennis team stays perfect

    The South Brunswick girls tennis team remained unbeaten, defeating South Columbus 5-4 on Sept. 8 and Cape Fear Academy 8-1 on Sept. 9.

    The Cougars are 6-0 overall, 2-0 in the conference.

    In the conference match against South Columbus, the Cougars won five of the six singles matches. Lauren Scheetz at No. 5 and Sarah Brock at No. 6 clinched the victory by winning their matches in tiebreakers.

  • Hoggard shuts out West Brunswick Trojans

    Hoggard scored two goals in the final four minutes of the first half and went on to beat West Brunswick 3-0 in a conference match Sept. 9 at West.

    The loss was the first of the season for the Trojans (6-1). The Vikings improved to 3-0-1.

    “This was a tough game against the Trojans,” Hoggard coach John Teller said, “and they actually moved the ball better than we did.”

    Teller said his team was lucky to have been playing a poor schedule until it met West, and that has given time for his starters and his reserves to play as a unit.

  • Shallotte wins opener in rout

    The Shallotte Middle School football team opened its season Sept. 9 by routing Chadbourn 54-12 at West Columbus High School.

    SMS scored three times in the first quarter.

    Greg Bell scored Shallotte’s first points on a 10-yard run.

    Jamar Bethea scored on a 15-yard punt return and Markel Jones scored on the two-point conversion.

    Bell scored on 25-yard run and Scottie Melvin kicked the extra point, putting SMS ahead 21-0.

    In the second quarter, Jones scored on a 55-yard run. Melvin’s extra point put SMS ahead 28-0 at halftime.

  • Coast Guard seaman pleads guilty to child pornography charge

    An Oak Island man pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Monday to receiving child pornography.

    Keith David Smith, 22, a seaman in the U.S. Coast Guard, now faces up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and a lifetime of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

  • Services set for CIS board member

    Stephanie Bessmer is described as a beloved wife, mother, daughter and sister, but those who knew her will remember her for more.

    Bessmer, 48, died Tuesday as a result of a weather-related automobile wreck in Johnston County. She was on I-40 when her car hydroplaned during a rainstorm.

  • Gas prices increase; Governor cracks down on gouging

    Friday morning, Gov. Mike Easley declared a state of “abnormal market disruption” under state law, which charges the Attorney General with enforcing the price gouging statute.

    By Friday afternoon, gas prices in Shallotte and surrounding areas were maxing out at more than $4 a gallon for premium, and vehicles were lined up at stations like Caroco and Kangaroo on Main Street
