  • Proven plants for hot, humid climates

    Heat and humidity is the name of the game and the main challenge for growing plants in the Southeast. Though the spring was very dry, with little rainfall in April through June, temperatures were above average in those months. In July and August, the region experienced more rainfall and higher temperatures then average.
    Each year around the United States, hundreds of new plant varieties are tested. Here are the top five varieties that trial garden leaders recommend for our specific region for 2012:

  • Some classic French dessert recipes are not so difficult to make

    Some of my favorite dessert recipes sure to please everyone are classic French recipes suitable for your family meals or for entertaining family and friends. And the best part is...they’re not so difficult to make.
    You’ve heard people always say that the “proof of the pudding is in the eating.” Once you have made any of these classic desserts, you’ll be eating them more and more. If you are as passionate about your food as I am, your love affair with French desserts will grow.

  • Golden and silver anniversaries

    Bobby and Yvonne Gore of Ocean Isle Beach and Steve and Melba Johnson of Shallotte celebrated their golden and silver anniversary, respectively, in a joint renewal of vows ceremony at Jennies Branch Baptist Church on Jan. 7. The Rev. Robbie Stephens conducted the service. A reception took place following the ceremony in the fellowship hall.
    The Gores were married on Dec. 24, 1962, in Conway, S.C. They have two sons, Keith and Jon, and three grandchildren: Jason, Ryan and Russ Gore.

  • Varnam-Owens wedding

    April Ginger Varnam and Matthew Keith Owens, both of Ocean Isle Beach, were married Oct. 1 on Ocean Isle Beach. The Rev. Richard Vaughn officiated the ceremony.
    The bride is the daughter of Ronald and Jencie Varnam of Varnamtown. She was given in marriage by her parents.
    The groom is the son of Daniel and Beth Owens of Wake Forest.

  • Community briefs

    TOPS to host open house Jan. 30
    January is International Open House month for all TOPS Club, Inc.(Take Off Pounds Sensibly) chapters.
    The local TOPS chapter in Supply will host an open house event at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at Sharon United Methodist Church, 2030 Holden Beach Road in Supply, in the fellowship hall. Refreshments will be provided.
    TOPS was founded in 1948 and is a nonprofit weight loss support organization. Its international headquarters are in Milwaukee, Wis.

  • Golf Ball is Feb. 25

    The First Tee of Brunswick County is looking forward to celebrating with the community at its second annual Golf Ball on Feb. 25. The black tie optional event will return to 101 Stone Chimney Place in Supply.
    “The guests enjoyed the Golf Ball and centralized location last year, so working with the folks from 101 Stone Chimney was the right choice,” said Kimmie Durham, TFTBC board member and event chair.
    The gala event will support the scholarship Pprogram of TFTBC. TFTBC has impacted more than 10,000 youth in our area.

  • Senior golf program continues in 2012

    Dates and courses have been set for the 55+ Senior Golf Program. Golfers play once a month at golf courses throughout the county for a reasonable fee and a chance to win prizes. Golfers can pick and choose which months they want to play. Of note, the Gator Games qualifier is April 26 at Brierwood Golf Club. This is for Brunswick Gator Senior Games participants only. The registration packet must be completed by March 9 to play in this tournament. Call Khrystye Haselden for more information at (910) 253-2670.
