  • Floyd deserves explanation

    Never assume anything.

    About the only thing I remember from my high school geometry class was my teacher, Mr. Luzzi, saying in response to questions about cosines and cotangents, “Never assume anything.”

    I have no idea why I remember that advice. But it was advice I should have followed last week.

    Dalton Gore is preparing to travel to Pebble Beach and participate in the Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, presented by Nature Valley, as a representative for The First Tee of Brunswick County.

  • Black drum providing good fishing action; getting fisherman ready for fall

  • Golf action

    Vince Brown scored a hole-in-one Aug. 12 on the 163-yard 12th hole of the Sea Trail Byrd course using a 5-wood.

    BEACHCOMBERS

    The Beachcombers played a three low-nets tournament Aug. 15 at Carolina Shores. Winning the gold medal with a score of 192 (minus 24) was the team of Bill Cameron, Jim Beairsto, Ed Hennessey and Dennis Davidson. Low gross with a score of 83 was the team of Bob Byrne, Stu Cleveland and Randy Cogdill. Low net was Dennis Davidson (63). Davidson was also voted golfer of the week.

  • County teams scrimmage

    The three county high school football teams get a final warm-up this evening for the 2008 season when they play in the ATMC Wireless County Clash. The scrimmages begin 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at North Brunswick High School. This is a change in the schedule.

    The first games of the season are next Friday. For schedules, rosters and previews, see pages 8–9B.

  • Trojans play soccer home opener

    As the early morning sun rose over the bleachers on the east side of Rourk Stadium, the West Brunswick soccer players found themselves not asleep in the comfort of their beds but instead amid exhausted fellow teammates circling the track. The first part of a two-a-day tryout schedule was merely half of the workouts these players had to endure to make the men’s soccer team.

  • UPDATEBeacon, ATMC gear up for high school football season

    High school football is getting ready to kick off and the Beacon and AMTC want to make sure everyone is ready for another season.

    The Beacon recently teamed up with ATMC to produce a preseason coaches’ show.

    Tune in to ATMC Channel 3 beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18 for the coaches’ show.

    During the hour-long show, Beacon reporter Caroline Curran tackles all things football with local coaches and players.

  • Whale comes ashore in Holden Beach

    The UNCW Marine Mammal Stranding Response Team was called out to Holden Beach Saturday morning after a pygmy whale reportedly washed up on the shore at 1003 Ocean Blvd.

    The whale was alive when removed from the beach, but later died.

  • Two die in wreck on U.S. 17

    Two people died as a result of a three-car wreck Friday afternoon on U.S. 17 in Supply.

    Richard Wayne Green, 40, of Bolton, was driving a 2007 Mazda northbound on U.S. 17 at about 75 mph when he attempted to pass a truck in the right-turn lane leading to Brunswick Community Hospital, 1st Sgt. J.O. Holmes, of the N.C. State Highway Patrol, said.

    Green sideswiped a car in the right-turn lane and then collided with a third vehicle waiting at the stop sign to leave the hospital, Holmes said.
