The Leland Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department (LVFRD) was recently certified to provide three rescue procedures by the North Carolina Association of Rescue and Emergency and Medical Services.

The department was certified as a provider of heavy rescue, high angle rescue and open water (still water) rescue.

The new certifications make the Leland Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department the only state-certified heavy rescue provider in Brunswick County. The department was required to meet specific standards of training and equipment to qualify for each certification.

Sunset Beach police officers investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from police incident and arrest reports.

•Ralph Ray Mann, 50, of Yorktown, Va.; charged with delay and obstruction, speeding and careless and reckless driving on Main Street on the island.

Ocean Isle Beach investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from police incident reports.

•Property damage on Sanford Street; unknown victim caused $3,500 damage to paint on an Acura.

•Property damage on Concord Street; subject cut four tires on victim’s truck causing $300 worth of damage.

•Matthew Timothy Kales, 20, of Cottage Grove; charged with underage drinking less than 21 years of age.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies issued the following citations and made the following arrests last weekend through its community policing program.

The sheriff’s office community policing program targets areas in the county with high crime and drug activity through increased patrols.

Areas targeted last week include Goodman Road near Leland and Hickman Road near Calabash.

•Glen Allen Brown, 44, of 165 Goodman Road NE, Leland; cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.
