  • Carolina Shores opens new 2,200 square foot town hall annex

    CAROLINA SHORES—Town leaders and certain employees have started moving into the new town hall addition that has just been completed.

    The 2,200-square-foot structure is to provide additional office space for a town staff that was starting to outgrow the original brick town hall building built almost a decade ago on Persimmon Road.

    The new, connecting annex will provide sorely needed space for 11 new offices for town administration and finance departments, as well as three restrooms and a reception area.

  • Wily coyote possibly on loose in Carolina Shores

    CAROLINA SHORES—Residents in the Village at Calabash are being warned about a possible coyote on the loose in their neighborhood.

    Bill Brennan, Village at Calash POA president, said recent incidents, including the killing of a duck this past Sunday night, are being attributed to a coyote.

    A resident recently photographed an animal roaming the community after dark that is believed to be a coyote.

    Brennan said a former animal control officer who lives in the neighborhood identified the mystery animal as a coyote.

  • Galiano continues her journey on reality show

    Dolores Galiano always thought her granddaughter could dance, but it’s up to America to decide.

    Courtney Galiano is competing in Fox’s reality show “So You Think You Can Dance,” and has made it through four weeks of eliminations. This week may be the most crucial, as the dancers will be narrowed to 10 and qualify for the 55-city tour once the show ends.

    Dolores Galiano and her husband Vinny traveled to Los Angeles two weeks ago to watch a taping of the show and were “just as nervous sitting in the audience as sitting at home.”

  • Brunswick native throws hat in ring for lieutenant governor

    Protecting property rights, ending “corporate welfare” and fighting the national ID card movement are high on Phillip Rhodes’ priority list as he begins campaigning for lieutenant governor of North Carolina.

    The Brunswick County native, who now lives in Chapel Hill, recently filed as the Libertarian candidate for the second-highest office in the state, soon after the party was reinstated in North Carolina.

  • Gores take love of dance to the stage for 'Stars' fundraiser

    When it comes to social dancing, Ed and Dinah Gore are each other’s favorite partners, but when it comes to Brunswick Community Foundation’s Dancing With the Stars fundraiser, Dinah says she and her professional partner Paul McTaggart are the ones to watch.

    “We have fun with it, but I’m pulling for Dinah,” Ed said. “I’m not trying to win; I’m trying to do a good job.”

    Dinah made it clear—she’s trying to win, and she has no problem asking Ed to help.

    •Larceny on Ocean Boulevard East; suspect stole victim’s concrete stepping stones.

    •Larceny at the Winding River Clubhouse beach access; suspect stole victim’s Trek mountain bike.

    •Vandalism on Ocean Boulevard East; suspect damaged light bulbs and safety latches for gates.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Larceny on McMilly Road in Shallotte; suspect removed speakers from victim’s vehicle.

    •Larceny on Lanvale Road in Leland; suspect took victim’s vehicle without permission.

    •Larceny on Maple Road NW in Ash; suspect took items off victim’s trailer.

    •Vandalism on Settlers Way in Ocean Isle Beach; suspect broke victim’s yard light.

  • Drug court to begin July 17

    Beginning July 17, Brunswick County will have the first night court in southeastern North Carolina.

    Twice a month, from 5-6:30 p.m., Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Ola Lewis will oversee Brunswick County’s drug court.

    For a defendant to be eligible for drug court, which is a felony drug court, not a first offender drug court, they must be eligible for an intermediate sentencing.

    Intermediate sentencing means prison and probation.

  • Shallotte police report

    Shallotte police made the following arrests and investigated the following incidents last week.

    All information is taken directly from police reports.

    •Police arrested Phillip Warren Riley, 44, of Hall Street, Shallotte, on charges of defrauding the innkeeper after leaving Chili’s without paying for alcohol he consumed.

    •Breaking and entering and larceny of money at Bojangles; suspect took $3,100 out of the safe.

  • Drug report

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit made the following arrests last week.

    The suspects and their charges, which are taken directly from arrest reports, are:

    •Rodney Troy Williams, 39, of 2510 Maco Road, Leland; charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine, maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

    •Melissa Dawn Todd, 23, of 2510 Maco Road, Leland; charged with felony possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
