Brunswick County code enforcement administrator Fred Morris is among more than 20 men who have signed on to compete in a womanless beauty pageant Saturday night in Little River, S.C., to benefit the Kayla Bennett Softball Scholarship Fund.

Bennett was a rising junior at North Myrtle Beach High School when she was killed July 26, 2007, in a one-vehicle crash outside Loris, S.C., attributed to speeding and drunk driving by another teen.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office recently launched its newest law enforcement initiative, the K-9 enforcement team.

The team, comprised of five K-9 officers and their dogs, is similar to the sheriff’s office community policing program, which targets areas with high crime and drug activity, but the K-9 enforcement team is its own patrol division.

The K-9 enforcement team answers calls, conducts driver’s license checkpoints and assists with other agencies when K-9s are needed.

Sunset Beach police investigated the following incidents this past weekend. All information is taken directly from police incident and arrest reports.

• On July 20, a breaking and entering was reported at a residence on Indigo Circle. Someone forced a door open but nothing was taken.

• Police investigated a misdemeanor and larceny reported on the beach. Two young men picked up a beach bag and ran off with it. The bag was later found stashed behind a house on North Shore Drive. A set of keys was missing.

Shallotte police charged the following people and investigated the following incidents last week. All information is taken directly from police reports.

•Joshua Matthew Potter, 27, of Holden Beach Road, Supply; charged with being drunk and disruptive at the Lowes Foods parking lot. A patrolman was dispatched to the store in reference to an intoxicated driver. He found Potter unresponsive in the back seat. When he finally woke him up, Potter was being rude and started to yell and curse. He was placed in the Brunswick County Detention Center on a $500 secured bond.
