  • Brunswick County Volunteer Awards

    Jayne Mathews, director of the Brunswick County Volunteer Center, announced five recipients of the Brunswick County Volunteer Awards last week at a reception in Bolivia. One of the recipients, Mary Pritchard, a volunteer at South Brunswick Interfaith Food Pantry, went on to win the Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service.

  • West, South open wrestling season

     The West Brunswick and South Brunswick wrestling teams opened their seasons in duals Nov. 23 at West with Hoggard, Lumberton and South View.

    West lost to South View 48-22. West winners were Ronnie Dellinger 6-2, James Hall 13-5, Antaun Miller by fall, Mike McCrimmon 13-11 and Bryan Lewis by fall.

    West beat Lumberton 54-28. West winners were Shane Bell by forfeit, Ronnie Dellinger by fall, Dillon Aubrey by fall, James Hall by fall, Mason Underwood by fall, Jason Huff by fall, Antaun Miller by fall, David Gibson by fall and Markell Stanley by fall.

  • Holden Beach moves closer to finalizing property purchase

    Holden Beach commissioners unanimously authorized the town attorney, mayor and/or town manager to sign the closing documents for the town to purchase three lots behind town hall and accept three other gift properties, once the documents are legally prepared and agreeable to both the buyer and seller.

    Holden Beach Enterprises has offered to sell the Town of Holden Beach three lots behind town hall for $1 million and offer the other three properties as gifts.

    The following cases were adjudicated over two days of District Criminal Court on Nov. 12 and 16 in Bolivia.

    Codes: PG, pleaded guilty; PNG/NG, pleaded not guilty, found not guilty; PNG/G, pleaded not guilty, found guilty; BCDC, Brunswick County Detention Center; NCDOC, North Carolina Department of Corrections.

  • Grand jury returns indictments

    The Brunswick County Superior Court under the direction of the Honorable Judge Ola M. Lewis with prosecutor Rex Gore and courtroom clerk Michelle Caulk adjudicated the following cases during a superior court grand jury session on Nov. 15:

    Stephanie Sabrina Aguirre, 18, of 485 McMilly Road, Shallotte; felony robbery with dangerous weapon, felony conspiracy robbery with dangerous weapon.

  • Victims provide support for one another during cycle of grief

    When you lose someone you love in a tragic, sudden, violent way, you spend a lot of time thinking about how you feel.

    In the days and weeks and months that follow a loss, you wonder if you’ll ever survive the weight of the grief you feel—the anger and the hurt and sadness that clings to you.

    As time passes, your brain tells you that you should be coping better—that the pain should be less and the reflection of good times more.

  • Volunteers make important contributions to our community

    Although some people may think the giving season begins the day after Thanksgiving, right here in Brunswick County volunteers show it’s giving season all year long.

    Last week some of those dedicated volunteers were honored by Jayne Mathews and the Brunswick County Volunteer Center for their selfless dedication to this community.

  • Victorious Secret wins Ocean Ridge LGA Carolina Cup

    The Ocean Ridge Ladies Golf Association played its fourth annual Carolina Cup tournament (formerly called the Ryder Cup) Nov. 8, Nov. 10 and Nov. 15.

    As in traditional Ryder Cup matches, there were three formats: alternate shot, better ball and individual match play. In each format, the winners of the match gained one point for her team. 

  • Thistle has first club championships

    Thistle Golf Club recently played its inaugural men’s and ladies’ club championships.  The men’s club championship was played Aug. 7-8 with Charlie Moore winning the gross division and Jim Helm the net division. 

    The ladies’ club championship was played Oct. 23-24 with Diane Peoples winning the gross division and Debbie Vankoski winning the net Division.  

  • The Life Skills Experience series coming to The First Tee in February

    Last month, The First Tee Box finished a nine-part series on The First Tee Nine Core Values. The volunteer parents on the chapter’s public relations team helped write several of the heart-warming articles.

    For 2011, volunteer coaches will write about The First Tee Life Skills Experience. These articles will cover many of the core lessons that are unique to the Par, Birdie, Eagle and Ace levels.
