    The Shallotte Police Department investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from police incident and arrest reports.

    •Bismock Jerome Hailey, 48, of Ash: charged with driving while license revoked, fake registration and no insurance.

    •Nicholas Daniel Locklear, 32, of Supply; charged with domestic violence violation.

    •Jonathan Edward McDaniel, 25, of Shallotte; charged with resisting arrest.

  • ELECTIONS: Constitutional amendment to ban felon sheriffs passes in North Carolina, Brunswick

    The people have spoken, and they do not want convicted felons serving as their chief law enforcement officer in North Carolina counties, including Brunswick.

    According to unofficial election results, the constitutional amendment to ban convicted felons from serving as sheriff in North Carolina garnered statewide support and passed 34,297 votes to 4,839 votes in Brunswick County. Statewide, the amendment passed with 2.05 million votes to 362,061 votes, with 95 of 100 counties reporting.

  • More than 50 percent of registered voters go to the polls Tuesday

    Polling locations across Brunswick County reported a steady influx of voters throughout the day Tuesday. Polls were open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

    Unofficial results reported by the Brunswick County Board of Elections website show that voter turnout on Tuesday was 51.83 percent with 40,196 ballots cast in the county.

    Greg Bellamy, director of the Brunswick County Board of Elections, noted Tuesday’s voter turnout in Brunswick County.

  • Dresses for Haiti



    The desire to make a difference for the youth of Haiti led one local church to break out sewing machines.

    Earlier this year, it was placed upon the heart of Big Macedonia Church senior mission director Dale Williams to reach out to the people of Haiti. At the time, she wasn’t sure what mission project the church should undertake.

  • The founder of Ocean Isle Beach celebrated

    Laughter and tears were shared at a celebration of life for the founder of Ocean Isle Beach.

    On Saturday, Oct. 30, family and friends of the late Odell Williamson gathered on Ocean Isle Beach in a celebration of his life and his life’s work. Williamson died on Sunday, Oct. 3.

    Often called “the father of Brunswick County,” Williamson died at the age of 90. He was born in Brunswick County on Nov. 19, 1919, to the late John Bunn and Love Bennett Williamson.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office drug report

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit and the North Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Police Department have arrested three suspects from the Little River, S.C., area as part of an ongoing prescription pill diversion investigation.

  • Ocean Isle Beach man arrested on firearm by a felon charge

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit and the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have arrested an Ocean Isle Beach man for possession of firearm by a felon.

    According to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Sgt. April Stanley, agents arrested David Otis Mercer, 68, of 1724 Pembroke St., Ocean Isle Beach, for firearm by a felon after an undercover operation by the two agencies on Oct. 20.

    This was Mercer’s second possession of a firearm by a felon charge.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's office crime report

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Breaking and entering and property damage on Chickadee Place in Shallotte; suspect broke into victim’s house and damaged the front window.

    •Larceny on Old Ocean Highway in Bolivia; suspect stole a Blackberry from victim’s purse.

    •Property damage on Persimmon Road in Carolina Shores; suspect threw a pumpkin at victim’s mailbox.

  • DWI checkpoint nets 11 arrests in Leland

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) Team set up a checkpoint Sunday, which resulted in 11 driving while impaired (DWI) arrests.

    ACE deputies, along with officers from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, Wilmington Police Department, Shallotte Police Department, Oak Island Police Department, Bald Head Island Public Safety, Navassa Police Department and the N.C. State Highway Patrol, set up the checkpoint from 11:30 p.m. until 3 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, on U.S. 74-76 at the Brunswick River Bridge near Leland.
