  • Four decades later

    There are unsung heroes in America who deserve recognition. It may be four decades late but finally there is a celebration of these brave men and women’s dedicated service to their country.

    On Saturday, March 31, a Vietnam Veterans Homecoming Celebration event is planned at the Charlotte Motor Speedway by the USO of North Carolina, Charlotte Motor Speedway and North Carolina Association of Broadcasters.

    •Larceny by employee/embezzlement at Frank Theaters; suspect took $397.

  • Town opposes school calendar changes: Fears tourism will suffer

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH—The town adopted a resolution Tuesday morning opposing a proposal for Brunswick County Schools to change school calendar dates.

    The calendar will be discussed by the Brunswick County Board of Education after it is taken up in a calendar committee meeting. The board of education is poised to talk about the changes in March. Some proposed calendar changes would require approval from the state General Assembly.

    The 2012 Readers’ Choice Best of Brunswick award winners have been named. Make sure you don’t miss them; they appear in a special section in this week’s Beacon.

    This is the fifth year the Beacon has sponsored the contest, which has more than tripled in responses since its inception.

  • Military news

    McLamb joins Air Force
    Ashley S. McLamb, son of Scott and Lynn McLamb of Ocean Isle Beach, has joined the United States Air Force under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to enlist and delay going into basic military training for up to one year.
    Qualified men and women are eligible to receive skill training, experience and up to $20,000 in education benefits. After completing basic military training, airmen receive specialized technical training in one of more than 125 job career fields.

  • Willetts-Reddick

    Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Kelly Marie Willetts of Greenville and Stephen Lee Reddick of Stantonsburg. The bride-elect is the daughter of Terry D. Willetts and Julie B. Owens of Shallotte. The prospective groom is the son of Randy and Elaine Reddick of Stantonsburg. A March 3 wedding is planned in Boone. A reception will take place for friends and family on March 10 at Old Shallotte Baptist Church.
