  • Health Department receives ADA recognition

    The Brunswick County Health Department has announced the North Carolina Diabetes Education Recognition Program has received recognition by the American Diabetes Association and the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust has awarded the state a three-year grant of $125,000 per year to hire a second registered dietitian to help expand the program.

    The American Diabetes Association recognition will enable the health department to bill for Diabetes Self Management Education services.

  • Food Lion sets goal to raise $4 million for Children's Miracle Network

    Food Lion stores are running the “Food Lionee For the Children” campaign to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network from now through July 2. This year’s campaign has established a goal to raise $4 million.

    Food Lion customers may participate by purchasing paper Children’s Miracle Network balloons for $1 each from any of the 1,146 Food Lion or Reid’s stores. Food Lion supports 30 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in its 11-state operating area.

  • Minimum housing ordinance debated in Calabash

    CALABASH—Following debate, Calabash commissioners Tuesday night approved empowering the town planning and zoning board to develop a minimum housing ordinance.

    “There are some dwellings here in Calabash that are hardly livable, and yet we have no authority under our own ordinance to take any action,” commissioner Cecelia Herman said. “Therefore the planning and zoning board would like the board of commissioners to charge them with writing an ordinance on minimum housing.”

  • Calabash cancels fire services discussion, meets in closed session

    CALABASH—Town commissioners last week canceled a specially called meeting to discuss “fire services.”

    The session scheduled for Friday, June 6, was called two days earlier by Calabash Mayor Anthony Clemmons.

    When commissioners convened for the meeting at 4 p.m. Friday, Clemmons announced the discussion had been removed from the agenda upon the advice of a consulting attorney.

  • NCDOT to have citizens' informational meeting

    The N.C. Department of Transportation will have a citizens’ informational workshop for the proposed widening of Village Road (N.C. 1472) in Leland from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at the Leland Senior Center Community Building, 1490 Village Road NE in Leland.

    Citizens are invited to speak individually with NCDOT officials, as well as review project plans. Comments received during the meeting will be considered as plans are finalized.

  • Brunswick County 4-H has Fashion Revue

    Brunswick County 4-H youth gathered at the County Extension Office Training Center on May 19, after many hours of effort, focus, and determination, to face the judges and model their sewing project outfits.

    Each year, Brunswick County hosts a 4-H Fashion Revue as a county level competition for youth.

    Al Hight, county extension director, welcomed participants, family and friends to the 4-H Fashion Revue. Pledges were led by Leslie Wilson, the new 4-H program assistant, who also served as the narrator while 4-H’ers modeled the outfits they constructed for the audience.

  • Gasoline theft reported to Sunset Beach police

    SUNSET BEACH—Local police investigated a report by Sloane Vacations of a gasoline theft June 8.

    According to a Sunset Beach Police Department report, someone broke into a garage at The Colony II at Oyster Bay and siphoned gas out of power tools and a company van.

    Also on June 8, police arrested a man who declined to give his name on a charge of drunk and disorderly conduct on the beach. The man, tentatively identified as “Peter Doe” until his actual name could be determined, was being held at Brunswick County jail on a $500 bond.

    Brunswick County sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week. All information is taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Breaking and entering and larceny on Finch Drive in Leland.

    •Larceny on Old Ferry Road in Supply; suspect took a bottle of Hydrocodone.

  • Fatal wreck on N.C. 904

    A Shallotte man was killed last week when his moped struck a tractor on N.C. 904 near Sunset Beach.

    Just before 4 p.m. June 2, Keith Howard Lofton, 58, of 1059 Radford Way, was traveling north on his moped at about 35 mph, according to 1st Sgt. J.O. Holmes, of the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

    Lofton was driving in the roadway and apparently didn’t see the tractor with a bush hog on the back of it. The bush hog was partially on the shoulder of the road and moving at about 15 mph.

  • Alleged cocaine trafficker indicted

    The U.S. Attorney’s Office has indicted Leland resident Pablo Mora Espinoza on one count of possessing cocaine with the intent to distribute and one count of an illegal alien in possession of firearms, according to a press release from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

    Brunswick County Drug Enforcement Unit agents first arrested Espinoza in February on trafficking cocaine charges after an investigation in conjunction with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
